The E-wing starfighter, also known as the E-wing escort fighter or simply the E-wing, was an advanced combat starfighter utilized by the New Republic Defense Fleet during the years of the New Republic Era.

Characteristics

The E-wing escort fighter^[5] was an advanced combat starfighter manufactured by FreiTek Incorporated^[1] for the New Republic Defense Fleet in the years following the Galactic Empire's fall.^[6] The E-wing had a crew capacity of one pilot and an astromech droid.^[4] It was equipped with a Class 2 hyperdrive.^[7]

During the New Republic Era, E-wings were strategically deployed by the New Republic across its bases in order to bolster its established fleets. A squadron was stationed^[1] to protect the skies of^[8] the Outer Rim planet^[9] Lothal.^[8] Governor Ryder Azadi used the ships to complete patrols around Capital City, ensuring protection of its citizens.^[1]

In 34 ABY,^[9] Baron Paw Maccon owned an E-wing as part of his collection, located inside his palace on^[11] the Colonies planet^[9] Cato Neimoidia. During a Cold War mission against the First Order, the Resistance pilot Poe Dameron witnessed the E-wing with Maccon while needing to borrow a starship from him.^[11]

A starfighter designated as the "E-wing escort fighter" first appeared in the current Star Wars continuity in the non-canon LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures television series' 2017 episode "The Embersteel Blade," which was directed by Michael Hegner and Jeppe Sandholt. It depicts the character Zander Freemaker being excited when seeing it on sale among other starships at an auction on Mygeeto^[5] in 4 ABY.^[12] The episode also established that the starfighter was manufactured by FreiTek Incorporated.^[5]

The E-wing made its canonical debut in the comic Poe Dameron 23, which was written by Charles Soule, penciled by Angel Unzueta, and published by Marvel Comics^[11] on January 24, 2018.^[13] The starfighter debuted in live action in the 2023 Star Wars: Ahsoka television series episode "Part One: Master and Apprentice," which was directed by Dave Filoni.^[4] The canonical name "E-wing" was first identified in the respective entry of the Databank,^[6] and the accompanying LEGO set "New Republic E-Wing vs. Shin Hati's Starfighter" includes a buildable E-wing starfighter.^[14]

The E-wing escort starfighter first appeared in the Star Wars Legends continuity in the comic Dark Empire 3, which was written by Tom Veitch, illustrated by Cam Kennedy, and published by Dark Horse Comics^[15] on April 21, 1992.^[16] Future Star Wars concept artist Jake Lunt Davies also created an "E-wing" with his brother during his childhood, during which time he did not have any larger toys so instead made starships out of cardboard. Davies later reflected on his E-Wing, along with other designs he had made with his brother, as part of his Star Wars journey.^[17]
