"I remember when he lost his duel with Marka Ragnos…"
―Naga Sadow, to the Sith Council after Simus's death[2]

In approximately 5100 BBY,[1] a duel was fought between the Sith Lords Marka Ragnos and Simus,[2] who had been competing[4] in a power struggle[3] for the title of Dark Lord of the Sith Empire[2] since 5200 BBY.[3] Simus challenged Ragnos but was beheaded by his opponent during the duel.[4] Rather than succumb to his injuries,[2] Simus used Sith magic to keep himself alive. His head was preserved in a crystal sphere and he served as an advisor to Ragnos until the Dark Lord's death[4] in 5000 BBY.[5] Simus was killed later that year in a false-flag attack by his former pupil Naga Sadow, who subsequently recalled the memory of Simus's loss to Ragnos to the Sith Council in order to motivate them to retaliate against the Galactic Republic.[2]

Behind the scenes

The duel between Marka Ragnos and Simus was first mentioned in the third issue of The Golden Age of the Sith, an arc in the Tales of the Jedi comic series. The comic was written by Kevin J. Anderson and published by Dark Horse Comics[2] on December 11, 1996.[6] The comic states that Simus lost the duel centuries before its events[2] in 5000 BBY,[5] however, later sources such as the 1998 LucasArts CD-ROM Star Wars: Behind the Magic[3] and the 2008 reference book The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia suggest that Simus only lived as a disembodied head for a century.[4] This article follows the latter sources.

Notes and references

  1. 1.0 1.1 The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, Vol. III, p. 152 ("Simus") states that Simus challenged Marka Ragnos to a duel more than 5100 standard years before the Battle of Yavin, which corresponds to 5100 BBY. Additionally, The Essential Chronology establishes that Ragnos ruled the Sith Empire for a century before his death, and Star Wars: Behind the Magic states that Ragnos's control of the Empire began after his victory in the duel. Therefore, the duel must have taken place in approximately 5100 BBY.
