Dervis was a major who served in the Rebel Alliance's[1] Special Forces. Trained in cold-climate combat, the officer was among the 1,000 SpecForce troopers who were assigned to protect Echo Base,[2] the Alliance High Command headquarters on the ice planet Hoth.[1] By 3 ABY,[3] Dervis led an infantry detachment.[1]

In that year, the Battle of Hoth occurred, when the Galactic Empire launched a ground invasion on Echo Base.[3] During the battle, Dervis's troopers were stationed in Echo Base's Hangar Bay 7, from which they ran out to fight in defensive trenches against the Empire.[1] The Battle of Hoth ultimately led to an Alliance defeat, with the Empire forcing them to retreat the planet.[3]
