- "Derrown, known simply as the Exterminator."
- ―Count Dooku, introducing Derrown
Derrown, also known as "the Exterminator" because of the intense electric fields his body produced, was a male Parwan bounty hunter active during the Clone Wars.
In 20 BBY, Derrown was brought to Serenno, along with ten other bounty hunters including Cad Bane, Embo and Obi-Wan Kenobi disguised as Rako Hardeen, and Embo. Derrown and the other bounty hunters, were sent into the Box to see who would earn the honor of partaking in a plot to kidnap Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. After surviving, he became part of Cad Bane's group and participated in the kidnapping, which was eventually foiled by Kenobi.
Biography
- "Does anyone know what this gasbag is saying?"
- ―Cad Bane
Derrown was a male Parwan bounty hunter active during the Clone Wars.[5] In 20 BBY,[6] he was invited to Serenno by Count Dooku, along with several other bounty hunters including Cad Bane, Obi-Wan Kenobi disguised as Rako Hardeen and Embo to participate in a tournament designed by Moralo Eval.[5]
In the first challenge of the Box, Derrown and the other bounty hunters survived Dioxis, a poisonous gas, as a result of the disguised Kenobi's quick plan to escape. The second challenge, was a room filled with spinning electrified laser blades, where Derrown was able to once again escape quickly by using his Parwan abilities float to the hole in the roof and safely make his way out, following Bane and Kenobi.[5]
Derrown passes through the ray shield
Once the bounty hunters arrived at the third challenge, Derrown realized he played a vital role to the survival of the other hunters. In this challenge, ray-shielded walls closed in on the hunters. The switch to deactivate the walls was located on the opposite side of another ray shield. Derrown injected himself with an electrified serum, provided by Eval, and was deadly to all the other bounty hunters. Derrown used the serum, enabling his electrified Parawan body to pass through the ray shield and turn off the other ray shields. As a result, the other surviving bounty hunters were able to pass through and enter the final challenge.[5]
After the disguised Kenobi completed the fourth and final challenge, Derrown and was assigned the mission to kidnap Supreme Chancellor Palpatine on Naboo, alongside Bane, Embo, Kenobi and Twazzi; the other survivors of the Box.[5]
Upon arrival on Naboo, the bounty hunters infiltrated a hangar. Derrown killed two of the mechanics, strangling one with his tentacles and snapping the neck of another. Once the hunters secured the hangar, the bounty hunters were given their instructions by Bane. Bane assigned Derrown to be disguised as a Senate Commando; he would breach the ray shield that would surround the chancellor and destroy the main generator, allowing the rest of the hunters to capture the chancellor.[4]
On the trail leading to the stage, Derrown was confronted by a Senate Commando, who told the bounty hunter to remain alert. With nothing left to stop him, Derrown sneaked up to the shield generator, deactivated it, and set it for self-destruct. The blast incapacitated Chancellor Palpatine and blew his cover. Anakin Skywalker rushed to attack Derrown, while the Parwan used his blasters to attack Skywalker. However, Skywalker cut Derrown's blasters in two with his lightsaber. In response, Derrown subdued Skywalker, sending an electric shock into the Jedi with his tentacles. As Derrown attempted to escape using his jetpack, Kenobi who was still in disguise as Hardeen, used a sniper rifle to disable the jetpack, sending the Parwan spinning out of control, landing on the ground.[4]
Derrown was later seen at Plop Dribble's on Stobar. He hid behind a bar, while Savage Opress choked the waitress Sassi.[7]
Derrown was at Jabba's palace to Tatooine when he saw former Sith Lord Maul, Pre Vizsla, and Opress confront Jabba and Gorga Desilijic Aarrpo, where both Hutts submit to Maul's rule and joined his Shadow Collective.[8]
Personality and traits
Derrown was a male Parwan who was considered one of the most ruthless and best bounty hunters in the galaxy during the Clone Wars.[5] Derrown was 2.21 meters (7 feet, 3 inches) tall[3] and he had brown skin.[2] As a Parwan, Derrown's head was mushroom-shaped, he had skinny arms[9] and he had 3 gray eyes.[2] His body was gas-filled, lighter-than-air body allowed him to float on air currents, by anchoring himself with four leg-like tentacles and two arms. Derrown's buoyancy let him reach heights and vantage points not easily accessible to standard density competitors, but he lacked the speed and control that came with his mass.[10] Derrown's tendrils were capable of delivering deadly electric shocks,[4] which led to him receiving the grim nickname "the Exterminator."[5]
Skills and abilities
Derrown was skilled in armed and unarmed combat. Derrown's Parwan physiology, coupled with his jetpack expertise,[4] enabled him to excel at aerial maneuvers.[3] Derrown's infiltration skills combined with his physiology also enabled him to play a key role as a member of Cad Bane's group, as they broke into and seized control of a hangar in Theed. His skills in infiltration also enabled him to assist in disabling a shield that protected the Supreme Chancellor during Bane's kidnapping attempt on Naboo.[4]
Equipment
Derrown wore a jetpack that sported a shoulder-mounted armament blaster and wore special bandolier that insulate his bioelectricity from triggering the explosives and has holsters for his blaster pistols. Derrown was armed with unique blaster pistols that squeeze the triggers with enough force to fire blaster bolts.[11] He used the holographic disguise matrix during the Festival of Light, posing as a Senate Commando.[4]
Behind the scenes
The character of Derrown was voiced by Matthew Wood in Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series.[5] Derrown's design was based on a piece of artwork done by Ron Cobb of a colorful and odd Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina alien from the 1977 original Star Wars film Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope that ultimately went unused. Unlike Derrown, who is more like a sentient gasbag, Cobb's artwork described the alien as a ambulatory and tropical plant.[12]
