- "We got spiders inbound!"
- ―Clone Captain Rex, during the Battle of Malastare
The DSD1 dwarf spider droid,[1] or simply the dwarf spider droid,[5] was a model of battle droid[2] manufactured by Baktoid Armor Workshop.[1] Favored by the Commerce Guild,[5] it was first used against renegade miners in skirmishes that took place deep underground.[4] The unit was also known as the burrowing spider droid for its ability to invade narrow spaces. It was armed with a powerful nose-mounted laser cannon[8] capable of both rapid-fire and high-intensity burst.[1] It was also shown to be used as an anti-air weapon, shown during the Battle of Teth and by shooting down the LAAT gunship carrying the Bad Batch, Cody, Rex, Jesse, and Kix on Anaxes. The four legs of the droid were designed and manufactured to allow attachment and movement on vertical terrain, such as cliffs, seen during the Battle of Teth, where dwarf spider droids affixed themselves to the cliff of the B'omarr Order Monastery to utilize a superior firing angle at incoming clone troopers and AT-TEs.[6][1]
Later, the dwarf spider droid became a mainstay in the droid army of the Confederacy of Independent Systems against the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars.[1] Its underbelly was vulnerable to explosives, as demonstrated when Clone Captain Rex destroyed a dwarf spider droid by planting a thermal detonator on its stomach during the Battle of Teth.[6] Many were equipped with a self-destruct mechanism that, when threatened on the battlefield, would detonate.[9] The droids saw action in the early stages of the war, including the Battle of Devaron,[12] all the way up until some of the final engagements of the war, such as the Battle of Anaxes[14] and the Battle of Kashyyyk.[15]
Characteristics
The DSD1 dwarf spider droids were a type of battle droid[2] manufactured by Baktoid Armor Workshop[1] for the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[5] They had masculine programming,[6] red photoreceptors, and gray plating.[7] Their photoreceptors could see into the infrared spectrum and enabled them to see in total darkness.[4]
Dwarf spider droids had one nose-mounted laser cannon,[8] which could pack a punch. They relied on this powerful, centrally mounted heavy blaster cannon to blast enemy troops, vehicles and aircraft.[4] They also had a self-destruct mechanism.[9] Dwarf spider droids were equipped with two echolocation emitters and a tracing antenna.[10] The droids also had the capability of climbing vertical surfaces,[6] making them ideal for guard duty and reconnaissance. The droids were programmed to be about as smart as domestic animals and, as a result, they would sometimes refuse to follow dangerous orders.[4] Dwarf spider droids were 3.05 meters wide,[3] and 1.98 meters (6 feet, 6 inches) tall,[4] when excluding their antenna.[5]
