The Cygnus B system,[3] also referred to as the Cygnus system,[2] was located in the Esaga sector,[1] a part of the Slice portion of[2] the Mid Rim.[1] The system shared its name with the starship manufacturer Cygnus Spaceworks. That company was based in the Cygnus Star Empire, a small collection of worlds situated along the Mid Rim's Oktos Route hyperlane that were believed by the xenolinguist Doctor Milanda Vorgan to have been ceded as a bribe by the Hutt Clan-General Kossak Inijic Ar'durv to the allies of[4] the Hutt Empire's[2] enemy Xim the Despot during the conflict between Xim and the Hutts[4] twenty-five millennia before the Battle of Yavin.[2]

The Cygnus B system was home to giant algae-beds—immobile, sentient life-forms that were classified as a super-brain.[3] By 0 BBY,[5] Luke Skywalker, a young man from[6] the Outer Rim Territories planet[2] Tatooine, had seen pictures of the giant algae-beds from the Cygnus B system.[6]

Behind the scenes

The Cygnus B system was created by John Chesterman for "Cantina Communications," a one-page vignette included in the sixteenth issue of the Star Wars Official Poster Monthly magazine, published in 1979 by Paradise Press.[6] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas provided a shortened designation for the system and placed it in grid square R-11.[2]
