"They rely on pectoral fins topush themselves through the air—although their slow rate of movement means that they frequently fall victim to the predatory velkers and scavenging crab gliders."
―Ardis San Tekka about beldons, in her journal[3]

Crab gliders were ten-limbed creatures found on the gas giant Bespin that fed on the corpses of giant beldons in upper atmosphere of the world. They were included in the book Galactic Atlas and the journal of Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts' Director of Creature Cartography, Ardis San Tekka at some point after 34 ABY and 35 ABY respectively.

Biology and appearance

Five lumpy purple beldons float through the skies of Bespin.

Crab gliders fed upon beldon corpses.

Crab gliders were a type of carrion-eating creature found on the gas giant Bespin. When predatory packs of velkers attacked and fed on giant beldons in Bespin's breathable upper atmosphere, it attracted crab gliders, which then fed on the beldon's corpse until it began drifting toward Bespin's toxic planetary core.[2] Crab gliders had brown shells with a patch of tan on their underside, two antennae, and two black eyes. The creatures had ten segmented limbs with webbing between them and claws on the ends.[1]

History

At some point after 34 ABY, an illustration of a crab glider was included on a map of Bespin thought to have been drawn by the artist Gammit Chond based purely on travelers' tales. The map was later restored and published by the Graf Archive in the Galactic Atlas[1] and was also included in the updated version of the book released no earlier than 35 ABY.[4] At another point no earlier than the same year,[5] Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts' Director of Creature Cartography, Ardis San Tekka, mentioned crab gliders in her journal within an entry about beldons.[3]

Behind the scenes

Crab gliders were first mentioned in the 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars.[6] The creatures were then pictured in the 2016 reference book Star Wars: Galactic Atlas, which was written by Emil Fortune and illustrated by Tim McDonagh.[1]
