Corundum was a hard, crystalline mineral that had a red color. Though it was commonly used for manufacturing purposes, pure corundum was also incorporated into jewelry.[1] "Harder-than-corundum" was a common simile to refer to tough, stoic individuals such as Vega Sepen.[2]
