- "You're seeing a Nameless…your deepest, darkest fear. Me too, which is hardly surprising. I've seen those things in action, too many times. But reports are coming in from every ship in the fleet. Reports of every horror imaginable. Colossus wasps…Exogorths…summa-verminoth…"
- ―Rhil Dairo, to Keeve Trennis
Colossus wasps were a type of insect that the human journalist[1] Rhil Dairo[2] considered a horror. During the Battle of Eriadu[1] in 228 BBY,[3] during the High Republic Era, the Galactic Republic Stormwall Defense Fleet was attacked by Nihil scav droids, though due to the illusions created by the Nihil Child of the Storm H'Tar, the fleet believed it was under attack from what they feared most. While the Longbeam Gios came under attack from an illusioned[1] Force-consuming[2] Nameless creature, reports the Gios received stated that colossus wasps were attacking the fleet's ships, which Dairo informed[1] Jedi Master[2] Keeve Trennis of.[1]
Behind the scenes
The High Republic – Fear of the Jedi 4 marked the first mention of colossus wasps in the current Star Wars canon.
Colossus wasps were mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in the fourth issue of the 2025 comic series Star Wars: The High Republic – Fear of the Jedi, released as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase III.[4] The issue was written by Cavan Scott and published by Marvel Comics on May 21, 2025.[5]
In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the colossus wasp first appeared, via the form of an exoskeleton converted into an Ithullan ore hauler, in the fourth issue of the 1993 comic series Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi. The issue was written by Tom Veitch, penciled by David Roach, and published by Dark Horse Comics[6] on January 18, 1994.[7] The first installment of the A Guide to the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi Universe series of articles written by Bob Cooper, published in the 1995 twenty-sixth issue of the Star Wars Insider magazine, provided the first capitalization of the creature's name in "Colossus Wasp,"[8] which was subsequently used by several other sources.[9][10][11]
The 1996 reference book The Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels written by Bill Smith was the first source to use the lower-case form "colossus wasp,"[12] which became the spelling the majority of the media referencing the creature utilized.[10][11][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] The name "Ithullian colossus wasp" was also introduced in the same book[12] although, beginning with Star Wars Encyclopedia published in 1998,[10] the spelling shifted to "Ithullan colossus wasp."[11][17][19][20][21]
