Clone battalion commander, or simply battalion commander, was the lowest of four military ranks that a clone trooper commander could hold in the Grand Army of the Republic, with the other three being clone regimental commander, senior clone commander, and clone marshal commander. Clone battalion commanders were placed in charge of battalions of clone troopers, or 576 clones, alongside a clone major. Towards the beginning of the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, clone battalion commanders were denoted by yellow flashes on their Phase I clone trooper armor.[1]
As part of the Grand Army of the Republic's Order of Battle, battalion commanders were subordinate to clone regimental commanders, while clone majors were subordinate to clone battalion commanders.[1] CRC-09/571 served as a battalion commander during the First Battle of Geonosis and the Battle of Teyr, before being promoted to the rank of clone regimental commander.[2]
Behind the scenes
A clone battalion commander first appeared, albeit unnamed, in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, a 2002 film written and directed by George Lucas.[3] The clone was later identified as CRC-09/571, and mentioned to have held the rank of battalion commander during the events of the film, in Shatterpoint, a 2003 novel written by Matthew Stover.[2]
