- ―Odd Ball during the Battle of Coruscant
Clone trooper pilots,[1] also known as clone pilots,[6] were clone troopers that, due to having exceptional reflexes and vision,[7] as well as good spatial awareness,[8] were spotted early and brought into specialized training, with those who made the grade "earning their wings" as pilots.[7] The clones piloted various ships[8] and ground vehicles. Over the course of the Clone Wars, pilots were placed within vehicles like the Low Altitude Assault Transport-family, V-19 Torrent starfighters,[9] Clone Z-95 Headhunters,[10] ARC-170 starfighters, Alpha-3 Nimbus-class V-wing starfighters[4] and BTL-B Y-wing bombers.[11] Clone pilots were known for their skills as starfighter and starship pilots. They were also effective at armed and unarmed combat, survival and military tactics.[7] Like most clone troopers,[12] clone pilots were 1.83 meters or 6 feet tall.[7]

"Close the blast shields, lieutenant! Get us under those guns!" - ―Hawk, who served as a clone pilot with the rank of lieutenant, and Jedi General Anakin Skywalker in a gunship
An AT-TE Driver
Clone trooper pilots were also able to possess military ranks. Hawk held the rank of Clone Lieutenant during the Battle of Teth,[9] Jag held the rank of Clone Captain,[13] and Odd Ball held the rank of Clone Commander.[14] Clone pilots who were tasked with controlling an All Terrain Tactical Enforcer were known as AT-TE Drivers.[15]
Throughout the Clone Wars, pilots wore at least three types of pilot armor. Phase I pilot armor was mostly the same as their trooper counterparts, but their helmet lacked a fin. While not all AT-TE Drivers adopted it,[9] some such pilots wore the armor with grey and gold markings.[15] During the days of Phase II armor, two variants came to exist.[10][4] One variant had identical body armor to the Phase II armor, but had a different helmet.[16] The second variant had a blue bodysuit, and plating covering the torso, as well as minor plating covering the knees and elbows. The helmet was open.[4] Clone pilots served the Galactic Empire as Imperial Starfighter Pilots.[5]
