Chrysanthemum knots were a type of knot used on the planet Tao. A chrysanthemum knot and tassel was tied to the hilt of a lightsaber[1] that was passed down through the generations of the Yasaburō clan, a notable family on Tao.[2]

Behind the scenes

A chrysanthemum knot first appeared, albeit unidentified, in "Lop & Ochō," a short film that was released as part of the first volume of the Star Wars: Visions series. The animated short was written by Sayawaka, directed by Yuki Igarashi, produced by Geno Studio, and released on Disney+[2] on September 22, 2021.[3] Prior to the short's release, a chrysanthemum knot was first depicted simultaneously in the original Japanese and English dub trailers for the series, which were both uploaded to the official Star Wars YouTube channel on August 17 of that year.[4][5]

The chrysanthemum knot was identified in the 2022 art book The Art of Star Wars: Visions, written by Zack Davisson.[1] The Yasaburō clan's lightsaber, including its chrysanthemum knot and tassel, was designed by Ren Ishimori and concept art of it was colored by Yuichi Kuboki.[6] In the real world, chrysanthemum knots are a Japanese variation of the Chinese good luck knot.[7]
