"Palpatine has never been behind the Military Creation Act, and was ready to stall it when the leader of the opposition appeared to be dead. Would he have done so if it was a pro-military Senator who was killed? And when she showed up alive, he postpones the vote anyway. I seriously doubt whether he had intended for the vote to pass today at all."
―Candabrine Bu[2]

Candabrine Bu was a senator hailing from the celestial body Lansono in the Galactic Senate during the Separatist Crisis. A militarist, the Lansono senator supported the Military Creation Act, which aimed to create an army to assist the beleaguered Republic. When Supreme Chancellor Palpatine postponed the Senate vote on the act following an assassination attempt on Senator Padmé Amidala of the planet Naboo in 22 BBY, Bu publicly criticized the chancellor for using the situation to thwart the passage of the act.

Biography

Candabrine Bu lived during the reign of the Republic and hailed from the celestial body Lansono.[1] By 22 BBY,[3] they represented Lansono as a senator in the Republic's Galactic Senate.[2] That year,[3] during the Separatist Crisis, the Senate was debating the Military Creation Act—a piece of legislation that, if passed, would authorize the creation of an Army of the Republic.[4] As a pro-military senator, Bu was among the supporters of the motion.[2]

On 13:5:16—the date upon which the Military Creation Act was to be brought before the Senate for a vote[4]—Bu and other proponents of the bill were prepared to cast their ballots when word reached the Senate of an assassination attempt on Senator Padmé Amidala of the planet Naboo, a vehement opponent of the act. Amidala was believed dead in the attack, and, to allow for a period of mourning for the senator's passing, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine delayed the vote on the act until the following day. However, Amidala was alive, and her sudden appearance before her peers in the midst of the chancellor's makeshift eulogy served to dispel any rumors of her death. Palpatine ultimately decided to postpone the vote anyway, which angered a number of pro-military senators, including Bu.[2]

Following the session, the Lansono senator spoke to HoloNet News in an interview for HoloNet News CoCo District Edition, conveying the militarists' frustration over the day's events and accusing the chancellor of exploiting the assassination attempt on Amidala to derail the act.[2] Ultimately, though the Senate never voted on the the legislation, a centralized Republic army was formed by Palpatine following the Senate granting him emergency powers to counter the threat of war from the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[5]

Personality and traits

A militarist, Senator Bu sought to authorize the reestablishment of the Republic Military at the height of the Separatist Crisis. When Palpatine postponed the vote on the Military Creation Act following the believed death of Amidala, a leading member of the opposition to the legislation, Bu took to the HoloNet to accuse the Chancellor of trying to undermine the militarists and sabotage the act.[2]

Behind the scenes

Candabrine Bu was first mentioned in "BREAKING NEWS: Amidala Alive," an article[2] written by Pablo Hidalgo and Paul Ens[6] and published in HoloNet News Vol. 531 #56 on the HoloNet News website[2] on May 16, 2002.[7]
