A brood pouch was an abdominal slit where newborn Huttlets were nourished and grew.[1] Most Huttlets stayed in the pouch for the first fifty years of their life, emerging with the mental development about that of a ten-year old Human. For their first year of development, newborn Huttlets never left the pouch. Over the next fifty years, Huttlets could stay outside the pouch for gradually longer periods of time. Since this lengthy development phase often distracted Hutt mothers from their occupational duties, communal nurseries were available on Nal Hutta where surrogate pouch-mothers could hold the huttlets of other mothers in their pouches for a couple of hours each day. Unlike most Huttlets, Rotta did not stay in his father's brood pouch. Jabba preferred his offspring to directly experience the galaxy first-hand, such a thing being almost unheard of in modern Hutt society.
