"You know where he is, don't you?"
"He told me. He wants you to come. But you're a nice man, Luke Skywalker. I can't send you there. My son wants to kill you."
―The woman and Luke Skywalker, discussing her son Brakiss[1]

Brakiss's mother was a female Human from the planet of Msst who lived during the reign of the Galactic Empire. The woman became the mother to a Force-sensitive child called Brakiss, but as a baby, he was taken away from her by agents of the Empire to be trained as a spy. Brakiss was permitted to visit his mother on occasion, but she found him to have changed as a result of his Imperial training and he was resentful of her, believing her responsible for letting the Imperials take him away. When the Empire abandoned Msst shortly after the Battle of Bakura in 4 ABY, the woman remained behind and stole various pieces of Imperial equipment that helped her to survive.

In 17 ABY, Brakiss visited his mother on Msst and informed her that Luke Skywalker, a Jedi Master whom Brakiss has briefly trained under abandoned to return to the service of the Empire, would come to Msst looking for her son. Skywalker was investigating a terrorist bombing that Brakiss had organized and Brakiss instructed his mother to direct Skywalker to meet him on the planet Telti. On arrival on Msst, Skywalker was attacked and injured by the mistmakers, a bubble-like predator native to the world. Brakiss's mother rescued the Jedi and placed him into a bacta tank to heal. When Skywalker recovered, she delivered Brakiss's message but tried to dissuade Skywalker from venturing to Telti as she wanted her son to be left alone. Skywalker subsequently departed Mssst and confronted Brakiss on Telti.

Biography

A lost son

"He wasn't a bad boy once, Luke Skywalker. Really he wasn't. He was this bright, wonderful baby. He fairly glowed with life. Then they came."
"The Empire."
"They came into my home, looked at my boy, and they could use him. Him. A baby. And they took him from me."
―The woman and Luke Skywalker, discussing her son Brakiss[1]

Brakiss as a child

A Human[3] female[1] was born between 63 BBY to 58 BBY[2] and lived on the planet Msst, a small, sparsely inhabited world[1] located in the Msst sector, in the Mid Rim.[4] During her time on Msst, the woman witnessed many people be attacked by the mistmakers, a dangerous species of bubble-like predator native to the world, with very few of those attacked surviving. Msst became a stronghold of the Galactic Empire and the woman became the mother to a baby boy named Brakiss[1] and at some point between 15 BBY and 9 BBY,[5] the woman became the mother . The woman found Brakiss to be a cheerful, happy baby who brought her much joy. However, her time with him was cut short; the Empire discovered Brakiss to be Force-sensitive and despite his mother's protests, her baby boy was taken away by the Imperials.[1]

The Empire trained Brakiss in the use of his Force abilities to serve as a spy and threatened to harm his family if he did not cooperate.[6] The Empire allowed Brakiss to come back to Msst occasionally to visit his mother. Though he feigned happiness when he met her, his mother could tell that he had changed and believed that the Empire had stripped away the goodness in him. In truth, Brakiss blamed his mother for allowing him to be taken away by the Imperials.[1]

The Empire abandoned Msst shortly after the Battle of Bakura[1] in 4 ABY.[7] Brakiss's mother remained on the world, living alone in her dwelling, and she stole many pieces of abandoned Imperial medical equipment to furnish her home.[1] In 11 ABY,[7] Brakiss enrolled as a student at the Jedi academy of Luke Skywalker, a Jedi Master and hero of the Rebel Alliance[1] who sought to establish a new Jedi Order.[6] Brakiss eventually fled the academy to return to the Empire and he told them everything that he had learned while studying with Skywalker. Brakiss briefly visited his mother on Msst and told her about his betrayal of Skywalker. The woman could tell that her son's sense of guilt arising from his betrayal of his former master concerned Brakiss deeply.[1]

Encounter with Luke Skywalker

"I came here—"
"Oh, I know And it wasn't the brightest thing you've done, now is it? When you get your feeling back, you crawl into your X-wing and fly away home. Back to your family. You'll be better off."
―Luke Skywalker and Brakiss's mother [1]

Afterward, Brakiss's mother did not hear from her son for a number of years. Brakiss eventually became an apprentice to the Dark Jedi Kueller and aided his new master in hatching a plot to overthrow the New Republic, the government that had replaced the Empire as the dominant regime in the galaxy.[1] Circa 17 ABY, about six years[7] after Brakiss had fled Skywalker's Jedi academy, he returned to Msst to see his mother and told her that she would shortly receive a visit from Luke Skywalker. He gave her directions to Telti, a world on which Brakiss was overseeing the production of bomb-laden droids for Kueller, and instructed her to tell Skywalker that Brakiss was waiting for the Jedi Master there.[1]

After Brakiss and Kueller engineered the bombing of the New Republic senate hall, the meeting place of the New Republic Senate, Skywalker sensed Brakiss's involvement and, having traced Brakiss's homeworld to Msst, ventured there in search of him. Skywalker landed at an abandoned Imperial facility near where Brakiss's mother resided and after disembarking from his ship was attacked by a group of mistmakers. On hearing Skywalker's vessel land, Brakiss's mother donned some protective gear and headed out to the landing pad in hope that it was Brakiss, but turned away when she saw the mistmakers floating around it. Skywalker slashed one of the mistmakers and it exploded and showered him with acidic pink slime, which incapacited him and ate away at his clothes and skin. Brakiss's mother dragged the Jedi Master to safety in her quarters and removed his remaining clothes, then placed him in a bacta tank to heal him.[1]

Following some time in the tank, the woman transferred a still unconscious Skywalker to some air cushions, specialist devices designed for treating burn wounds. About a day after his arrival on Msst, the Jedi Master regained consciousness and Brakiss's mother relayed her son's message and provided Skywalker with directions to Telti. However, she warned the Jedi against venturing there as she believed her son was dangerous. Skywalker did not heed her warning and he subsequently left Msst and confronted Brakiss on Telti.[1]

Personality and traits

"He wants you to find him, Luke Skywalker. I think you should go home. Forget him. Nothing good can come of this. Whatever was good in my boy died a long, long time ago."
―The woman, to Luke Skywalker, on her son Brakiss[1]

Brakiss’s mother had silver-colored hair and bright blue eyes. She was beautiful in her younger years and though she was wrinkled by the time of her encounter with Luke Skywalker, her beauty still shone through. She also wore a silver ring on her right hand.[1]

The woman had a tendency to self-edit, often starting a sentence then leaving it unfinished and changing the topic. She loved her son but found Brakiss changed by his time with the Empire and believed that all of his happiness and goodness had been stripped from him. After the Empire abandoned Msst she remained on the world despite being left alone as, though it was inhospitable, Msst was her home. She on occasion missed the presence of droids, although by the time of her encounter with Luke Skywalker she had gotten used to living without them and could no longer tolerate their presence.[1]

When she rescued Skywalker from the mistmakers on Msst and removed the Jedi's clothes while placing him in a bacta tank, Brakiss's mother was unmoved by the sight of his naked body as nudity did not phase her. She did not want Skywalker to pursue her son as she believed that all that any goodness in Brakiss had long expired and her son was beyond the Jedi's help. Nevertheless, she considered that Brakiss had gained some productive work outside of the Empire from his position on Telti and she worried that Skywalker's intervention could ruin her son's chances of a future.[1]

Behind the scenes

Brakiss's mother was created by Kristine Kathryn Rusch and appeared as character in the 1996 Bantam Spectra Star Wars Legends novel The New Rebellion[1] and it's associated audiobook.[8] The woman subsequently received minor mentions in several Star Wars Legends reference books.[9][10][11]
