Barium reeds were a type of reed[1] that partially shared their name with barium, a poisonous substance that was present in starship fuels.[2] In 231 BBY,[3] the Nihil member Udi Dis accompanied Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro to the cold, lifeless planet of Rystan to meet the latter's cousin, a woman named Kufa. Dis was skeptical of the woman's frail appearance, thinking to himself that Ro could snap her like a barium reed.[1]

Barium reeds were mentioned in the 2021 novel The High Republic: The Rising Storm, written by Cavan Scott[1] for the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's Phase I.[4]
