The Assault on Galaan took place during the Galactic Civil War. Not long after the end of the Thrawn campaign, the New Republic maintained a vital communications base in the atmosphere of the gas giant Galaan. The base was also the headquarters of the New Republic Intelligence Service in the Corva sector. The secret New Republic base was discovered by Imperial forces of the Kaarenth Dissension due to the betrayal of a member of the New Republic Defense Fleet, Kiara Schmong. Two Imperial Carrack-class light cruisers allied with criminal elements attacked the defenseless base. Despite the presence of a New Republic operations group in the area,[1] the Imperial forces managed to destroy the the communications center, therefore hampering New Republic communications in the sector.[2]
