"Hull damage in sectors three, seven, fifteen, and twenty. Extruding ablative foam."
―Chiss officer to the bridge of the Steadfast during a skirmish with Grysk warships[2]

Ablative foam was a substance used to dampen impacts. Starship mechanics could install ablative foam dispensers in a ship's hold in order to protect fragile cargo from the impact of extreme maneuvers.[1] During a skirmish with Grysk warships[2] in 1 BBY[3] the Steadfast, a Chiss heavy cruiser, deployed ablative foam as a response to receiving hull damage.[2]

In 3 ABY,[4] Kay Vess paid a mechanic a thousand credits to install ablative foam dispensers in the hold of the Trailblazer, her EML-850 light freighter.[1]

Behind the scenes

Ablative foam was first mentioned in the 2019 novel Thrawn: Treason by Timothy Zahn.[2]
