8EX was one of the first B2-series super battle droid to be produced by the Geonosians, during the years leading up to the Clone Wars.

8EX was mentioned in the first expansion for Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Trading Card Game, Attack of the Clones,[1] released in 2002.[3] The image for the card was a composite image of a super battle droid superimposed upon a background of the arena on Geonosis,[1] from the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones,[4] upon which the expansion was based upon.[1]
