88-Z was a remotely activated[6] droid used in combat missions[1] and for surveillance by the Galactic Empire.[7] It was equipped with infrared scanners[4] and targeting sensors.[5] The droid was armed with blaster emplacements[2] and electromagnetic disruptors.[3] It also had the ability to deploy energy shields. 88-Z had gray and yellow plating, and a black sensor. While on[1] the planet[8] Coruscant, during the Galactic Civil War, 88-Z encountered a rebel cell.[1]
Behind the scenes
88-Z was first pictured with it's name visible, but illegible, in the news post Heart of the Empire on Fantasy Flight Games' official website on May 5, 2017, which depicted[9] the 88-Z card[10] that would eventually be released in the Heart of the Empire expansion set for Star Wars: Imperial Assault on October 12, 2017.[11] The droid was clearly identified as 88-Z in the news post Scour the Streets of Coruscant also on Fantasy Flight Games' official website on July 26, 2017.[1] 88-Z was designed by artist Cristi Balanescu[12] and originally appeared as an unidentified droid in the Star Wars Legends sourcebook Desperate Allies for Fantasy Flight Games' Star Wars: Age of Rebellion.[13]
