Zalso was a planet[2] located in the Core Worlds' Zalso system.[1] The Human Kiras Torla, who graduated from the offworld Galactic Outdoor Survival School[3] around 12 BBY[4] and was middle-aged[3] around 2 ABY,[4] was native to Zalso.[3] It was also the homeworld of Ral Shawgrim, a Human who was born[2] at some point no earlier than 16 BBY[5] aboard a luxury liner in[2] the Outer Rim Territories'[6] Tion Hegemony.[2]
By approximately 1 ABY,[7] a Rebel Alliance cell operated on Zalso.[2] At some point by that date,[7] Shawgrim's parents were employed there during the cor'tan season. Eventually, Galactic Empire soldiers killed them, which led to Shawgrim contacting the Zalso Rebel cell and becoming a member of the Alliance. Zalso's role in Shawgrim's biography was later noted by the New Republic General Airen Cracken in an entry of the datafile Wanted by Cracken[2]—the initial version of which was published in 7 ABY[5]—dedicated to Shawgrim.[2]
Behind the scenes
Zalso was first mentioned in the "Wanted by Cracken" segment of the November 1994 fourth issue of West End Games' Star Wars Adventure Journal. The segment was authored by C. Robert Carey.[2] The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas placed the Zalso system, and therefore the planet itself, in grid square M-11.[1]

"Wanted by Cracken" — Star Wars Adventure Journal 1 establishes that the "Wanted by Cracken" segment of the Star Wars Adventure Journal represents an in-universe update to the datafile Wanted by Cracken, the original version of which is presented in the sourcebook Wanted by Cracken. The latter work is dated to three years after the Battle of Endor, and since The New Essential Chronology dates that conflict to 4 ABY, the placement of the sourcebook therefore translates to 7 ABY. Furthermore, the installment of "Wanted by Cracken" in Star Wars Adventure Journal 4 establishes Ral Shawgrim is twenty-three years old, meaning he must have been born at some point no earlier than 16 BBY.
