During the December 8 Mofference, the reasoning behind a unified infobox and thumbnail policy was reviewed. We should assume that the lowest platform that will view Wookieepedia is Microsoft Internet Explorer at 800x600 resolution with no ad blocker.
For technical reasons, the optimum size for an infobox is 250 pixels wide. This is the default configuration of the infobox code, and smaller pictures in an infobox will result in a colored border around the image.
This also coincides nicely with the MediaWiki default thumbnail size, which is 180 pixels wide. Any thumbnail which is beside the infobox should be left at the default size or fixed to 180 pixels wide.
Use of smaller thumbnails or larger infobox images causes the page to be distorted, as shown in these screenshots. These were taken using Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. The window width is 800 pixels, and the height has been set to 1100 pixels for illustration purposes:
Because this is a technical issue and an accessibility issue, it isn't up for debate unless you plan to donate enough money to Wikia to remove advertisements completely or you can rewrite the MediaWiki software to allow more flexible formatting.
To do
- Explain how to format multi-column infoboxes.
- Add this to the image use policy as part of WookieeProject Images.
