By the time of the Battle of Yavin, Doctor Vigh was the chief scientist of the GeneTech Syndicate,[1] a biotechnology company based on the planet Talus, in the Corellian system.[3] During that time, Doctor Vigh was leading the Parasophic Arachne program,[1] an illegal and dangerous bioengineering project. The objective was to create an intelligent and powerful form of arachnes for the use of the Galactic Empire.[3] In 1 ABY,[4] the project was a success and Dr. Vigh ordered to transport several specimens to the Imperial research facility on Nubia. However, the situation really went wrong in a short time. The transport carrying the creatures crashed in the mountains near Nashal just after its departure and the arachnes escaped in the wilderness.[1] Moreover, the arachnes in the GeneTech Syndicate laboratory escaped containment, overwhelmed and slaughtered their creators. The Corellian Security Force eventually discovered the terrible situation in the lab. Most of the staff was murdered by the creatures but some surviving scientists had fled and went into hiding to avoid being arrested by the CorSec and charged with illegal biological experiments.[3]

- ↑ The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
