- "…and that his skills with the vibrowhip rival yours with the lightsaber, would you reconsider allowing me to fight at your side?"
- ―Aayla Secura describing Xist's vibrowhip skills to Obi-Wan Kenobi
Vibrowhips were vicious close-combat whips that were powered by a vibration generator.[1][2]
Description
Obi-Wan Kenobi is struck on the shoulder with a vibrowhip.
A vibrowhip was a whip augmented by a vibration generator; when activated, the weapon glowed blue and vibrated fiercely, with the damage of the whip being greatly augmented.[2][1] Depending on how hard the whip was swung, a vibrowhip could be used to simply tangle an opponent, or create a damaging strike capable of piercing armor.[1] When swung properly, vibrowhips could slash in a manner similar to a blade, and were capable of lopping off limbs and decapitating enemies.[2] At least some vibrowhips were more than capable of resisting lightsaber blades.[1] An extremely deadly weapon, the vibrowhip excelled at keeping enemies at range, and kept enemies guessing by how the whip could curl around a weapon's guard.[2] However, it shared several weaknesses with traditional whips as well, such as its inadequate defensive capabilities, the difficulty in controlling it, and the wide swings needed to gain momentum for strikes, leaving the wielder's defenses open to attack.[1]
History
The Falleen strongman Xist was renowned for his skill with a vibrowhip, and was said to rival Obi-Wan Kenobi's skill with a lightsaber; indeed, Xist fought Kenobi on his mission on Trigalis, and was put up a fierce fight during his duel with Kenobi. Ultimately, however, Kenobi took advantage of the vibrowhip's weaknesses, attacking Xist from close range with punches and kicks and wielding his lightsaber to parry Xist's attacks. Though Xist managed to score a solid blow to Kenobi's shoulder, he was ultimately defeated, dropping his whip when Kenobi kicked him in the abdomen.[1]
The Anzati assassin Torgo Tahn also utilized a vibrowhip, though used a very different technique; using wide slashes and spinning maneuvers, he utilized his whip more like a traditional blade, decapitating and amputating his targets as he pursued his contacts. Notably, he used this technique to behead his mentor, Anis.[2]
