Veshok wood was a type of hard and sturdy wood[1] hewn from the veshok trees of Mandalore. Veshok wood possessed a grain similar to that of oak trees,[2] and produced a large amount of heat when burned.[3] Due to the large number of veshok trees that grew on Mandalore—with sprawling veshok forests covering most of Mandalore's northern hemisphere, stretching nearly as far as the planet's polar ice cap[4]—veshok wood became a favored material for Mandalorian craftsmen to work with. Over the ages, veshok wood was used in the construction of homes,[1] furniture,[4] outdoor fencing, and even handcrafted toys for young Mandalorian children.[3]
Behind the scenes
Veshok wood was first introduced to the Star Wars universe in the Star Wars: Legacy of the Force novel, Sacrifice, written by author Karen Traviss and published May 29, 2007.[1] In the Mando'a dictionary compiled by Traviss, she noted that though veshok trees were intended to be large evergreens, veshok wood was nevertheless possessed of a wood grain more similar to that of oak trees.[2]
