- "Vandelhelm is a single planet system, but it has one of the biggest asteroid clouds you'll ever see."
- ―Lando Calrissian
The Vandelhelm Cloud was a vast asteroid field that encompassed the Vandelhelm system[3] in the Expansion Region's Epsi Collective.[1] The Vandelhelm Cloud was thick enough that the planet Vandelhelm, though extremely rich in valuable metals,[3] was not discovered until the relatively late date of approximately 3053 BBY.[5] The cloud's asteroids were so thick and unpredictable that it was reputed to take an ace pilot to navigate it. Guildmaster Orrk of Vandelhelm's Metalsmiths Guild mined the Vandelhelm Cloud in 4 ABY in an attempt to prevent the planet's Venerated Ones from returning from Imperial imprisonment, but Alliance of Free Planets hero Han Solo deftly ran the asteroids in his Millennium Falcon to return them home.[6]
Behind the scenes
The Vandelhelm Cloud briefly appeared in Star Wars (1977) 98, written by Archie Goodwin, illustrated by Al Williamson and released in 1985.[6] The cloud was later named in the 2004 Wizards of the Coast supplement Vandelhelm: Enemies and Alloys, written by Cory J. Herndon.[3]
