Luke Skywalker using a sandcrawler Vacuum Tube
A vacuum-lift,[1] also known as vacuum tube[2], is a chute that allowed rapid travel to great heights.[2] Air pressure in the tube carried an individual entering it to a higher level. The variety of places Vacuum Tubes were used include docking bays, Jawa sandcrawlers, and the first Death Star.[3]
Behind the scenes
In Adventures of the Starkiller, Episode I: The Star Wars, the second draft of the first Star Wars movie, the concept of a vacuum elevator (also called vacuum tube in the draft), was featured when referring to the elevators in the Death Star.[4] Vacuum-lifts went on to also be part of the Star Wars universe, through their introduction in Star Wars (1977) 20,[1] and Star Wars (1991 video game).[3]
A guide to the 1991 Star Wars video game in Nintendo Power magazine referred to these devices as "Jump Boosters."[5]
