In 22 BBY,[2] a test squadron of prototype V-19 Torrent starfighters was active within the Galactic Republic naval forces. Before the Clone Wars began against the Separatist Alliance, the Republic commissioned the Slayn & Korpil manufacturing company to produce a new model of starfighter, designed to supplement the navy's small arsenal of BTL-B Y-wing starfighter/bombers. After prolonged design processes, the time in which the Republic was still deploying Y-wings and aging starfighter models, the company produced and delivered a squadron of experimental V-19s for their contractors to flight test. As the war began on the planet Geonosis, the squadron saw field-testing in the engagement, deployed to great effect by its pilots. When the battle ended, the Republic ordered the fighters' immediate mass-production and utilized them extensively throughout the conflict.[1]

Behind the scenes

The V-19 test squadron was mentioned in Collapse of the Republic, a 2019 supplement to Fantasy Flight Games' series of Star Wars Roleplaying products. Collapse of the Republic establishes that the BTL-B Y-wing starfighter/bombers were already constructed and being used before the Clone Wars.[1] Meanwhile, issue nineteen of De Agostini's Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine series,[3] released around May 13, 2015,[4] states that the starfighters were still undergoing testing at the planet Bormus by the Battle of the Kaliida Nebula, after the Clone Wars began.[3] The article assumes that Collapse of the Republic is more accurate, due to being the more recent source.
