- James George Frazer's The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion influenced George Lucas in his initial writing of Star Wars[1]

- Metropolis, the German science fiction film by Fritz Lang. A New Hope C-3PO etc.
- 1935
- The parade imagery of the Nazi propaganda film Triumph of the Will inspired the rebel victory ceremony in A New Hope.[2]
- 1937
- Pablo Picasso's painting Guernica was a response to the bombing of that Basque town that year by fascist German and Italian forces in support of Francisco Franco in the Spanish Civil War.[3] The 2010 Season Two episode "The Mandalore Plot" of The Clone Wars and the 2013 Season Five episodes "Shades of Reason" and "The Lawless" feature cubist murals of Mandalorians killing Jedi, which were inspired by Guernica.[4][5]

- The Adventures of Robin Hood, directed by Michael Curtiz and scored by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, influenced George Lucas in his initial writing of Star Wars[1] and John Williams' score.

- Gone with the Wind, the film adaptation by Victor Fleming. Camera for A New Hope? The Empire Strikes Back poster etc.
- 1942
- Casablanca, the romance by Michael Curtiz set in (and filmed during) World War II. A New Hope cantina etc. For The Rise of Skywalker, prop designer Matthew Savage made an illustration of musical instruments for Kijimi with Casablanca in mind.[6]

- Howard Hawks' Air Force influenced George Lucas in his initial writing of Star Wars.[1]

- Akira Kurosawa's film The Hidden Fortress. A New Hope. For Kijimi City in The Rise of Skywalker, the stone walls of The Hidden Fortress served as inspiration for co-production designer Rick Carter.

- John Carter of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs and John Coleman Burroughs influenced George Lucas in his initial writing of Star Wars.[1]
- 1965
- David Lean's Doctor Zhivago film adaptation. Attack of the Clones poster, Varykino etc. Alec Guinness also starred.
