Kentor Sarne held control over the Kathol Sector during the reign of the Galactic Empire.

Biography

Imperial service

The Human male Kentor Sarne enlisted in the Imperial military several years after its formation, and soon established himself as a resourceful officer who held a firm belief in Emperor Palpatine's New Order. Around 12 BBY, Lieutenant Sarne was serving with the Imperial Survey Corps when his team was dispatched to the remote Kathol Outback. On the planet Kathol, the team encountered an alien bioconstruct that Sarne named "DarkStryder" as its true name was unpronounceable. DarkStryder had access to exotic technology that Sarne coveted; and the pair struck a deal. DarkStryder would provide Sarne with examples of the technology, while Sarne promised to help the DarkStryder escape its imprisonment on the planet. To keep his secret, Sarne used the alien devices to kill the rest of the survey team and return as the sole survivor of the expedition.[4]

Returning to the Empire, Sarne continued to serve the Emperor[4] and was assigned to the 15th Deep Core Reserve Fleet, where he commanded the CR90 corvette Renegade. The Renegade had originally been known as the Freedom's Messenger which had been severely damaged with the loss of all hands during the Battle of Ord Torrenze several years previously. However, with the Imperial military expanding at a phenomenal rate, the wreck of the vessel had been recovered and refitted for Imperial service.[2] The 15th Deep Core Reserve Fleet was tasked with the protection of Palpatine's secret retreat, Byss,[4] and Sarne's tenure as captain of the Renegade saw the vessel engage in a half-dozen campaigns against pirates, as well as hit and run raids on Alliance to Restore the Republic supply depots. His combat performance earned him a quick promotion.[2] During this time, he met and befriended Rolf Treidum, a fellow officer serving in the Deep Core.[5]

In 2 BBY,[2] Sarne used his political clout to engineer a promotion to the rank of Moff, along with the assignment oversee the Kathol sector,[4] a backwater territory in the Outer Rim Territories. One of his first acts was to request his old command, the Renegade, to be transferred to his forces. Taking up residence on the sector's capital, Kal'Shebbol, he overturned the societal structure in place, and enforced harsh restrictions on the population.[2]

Warlord

Following the Battle of Endor, the Empire began to fragment without a powerful leader to check everyone in line. Seeing an opportunity to set himself up as one of the countless new Imperial warlords, Sarne quietly withdrew his sector from the Empire, and consolidated his holdings and benefited from the remoteness of the Kathol sector.[2]

One of the tests on the DarkStryder modules went badly wrong. Two men were experimenting with a red tetrahedron known as a Firespray module. The artifact produced a jet of blue-green flame when its base was squeezed. During the test, the feeling of heat had instinctively made the two men jump away from the flame. Unfortunately for them, the action had caused the flames to follow them, rolling over them and cutting a meter-wide hole in one of the base's ancillary defense tunnels.[6]

Sarne had an arrangement with the Sabiador Slavers, a small-time slaving syndicate that operated in the Kathol sector. The group would often seek out new acquisitions for the Moff to use in his gladiatorial arena.[2]

At some point, Sarne ordered the construction of an underground hangar with tunnels leading to his office and personal chambers. Designed as the Moff's escape route, the hangar was home to the Carrack-class light cruiser Ambition.[6]

In 7 ABY, Sarne ordered the Renegade out of regular line service for an extended refitting at his private dockyard in the Sorbiss Valley. Sarne intended the Renegade to serve as a long-range exploration ship with enough firepower to subjugate lost colonies and civilizations. The ship was also intended to search the Kathol sector for any and all DarkStryder artifacts.[2]

Rigged the several cell doors in the detention area with enough explosives to bring down the entire ceiling, killing everyone inside.[6]

Stuck a deal with the Defel Kl'aal to work as his personal assassin in exchange for feeding the alien's hunger for freshly killed prey. Also used him to eliminate threats from resistance groups.[2] Once tried to get Kl'aal to kill a prisoner to feed his hunger.[7]

Forced Doctor Akanseh to work as an interrogator and torturer.[2] Forced him to chemically interrogate a prisoner, or face the same punishment.[8]

Forced Qesya Vth'naar to kill her own brother in a gladiatorial match.[2]

Sarne bought the Wookiee Lofryyhn from slavers and put him to work modifying the Renegade.[2]

Sarne learnt that one of his tactical aides, Colonel Jessa Dajus, was digging too deeply into his relationship with DarkStryder.[2] Imprisoning her, he conducted an interrogation using a fire whip that burned several scars into her arm.[6] Dajus refused to talk, and he left her in the detention cells while he devised several innovative methods for further interrogations.[2]

Became infatuated with Corla Unser and tried to woo her. His attempt failed, so he had her sent to the Q'Maere Research Facility to learn how to "appreciate" him.[2]

Flight into the Kathol sector

Sarne realized that the New Republic must have been informed of the rumors concerning the DarkStryder technology.[6]

Conducting the defense of Kal'Shebbol from the command center of his headquarters, Sarne lamented the fact that the New Republic fleet was more than a match for his small fleet in orbit. In addition, the shield generators were beginning to show signs of stress from constant use. When word reached him that a Special Operations team had breached the complex's perimeter, he decided it was time to leave the planet. Ordering his personnel to keep fighting, he left the command center, and collected several members of his personal guard. He ordered two of the guardsmen to the main database computer to enact his Omega order five, a command that would systematically flash-clear the computer database of information. Taking the others with him, Sarne headed to his personal quarters to retrieve his cache of DarkStryder modules.[6]

The Ambition takes off

The Ambition takes off

Exiting his personal chambers through a hidden door in the library case by his bed, Sarne led the troopers down an armoured corridor towards the underground hangar that the Ambition was berthed in. The crew of the Ambition consisted of his finest officers and crew, and they had loaded the vessel with all the DarkStryder technology they could gather. As Sarne and his escort neared the ship, one of the guardsmen heard someone approaching from behind them. Using a Firespray module, Sarne carved a defensive position in the flat walls of the tunnel, allowing the troopers to have some cover. Soldiers from Page's Commandos entered the tunnel, engaging the guardsmen and stormtroopers with weapons fire. Watching two of his guardsmen fall, Sarne produced another module from his tunic. Known as a Mindwarper module, it had the ability to disorientate and confuse anyone within the target area. Using it against the New Republic soldiers, Sarne was able to delay them long enough to reach the Ambition and escape the hangar.[6]

In orbit, Sarne escaped from the system with most of his personal fleet without giving away a hyperspace vector.[2]

Shortly after fleeing from Kal'Shebbol, Sarne ordered the escort carrier Kathol Protector to conduct a strike on the planet Kolatill after they overthrew their Imperial governor.[2][9]

Final showdown

During the final confrontation, Sarne was killed by Dajus, who used one of the DarkStryder's firespray modules to incinerate him.[4]

Personality and traits

Sarne was not liked by his subjects.[6]

Untrusting, sore loser.[2]

Sarne was not afraid to sacrifice troops and personnel if he deemed the end result to be a favourable one for him. He had no hesitation to leave the staff of his headquarters to fight on against the New Republic while he evacuated.[6]

Known to be vindictive enough to destroy former holdings.[2]

Behind the scenes

Kentor Sarne was created for West End Games The DarkStryder Campaign for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, and was the main protagonist of the book and its supplements, The Kathol Outback, The Kathol Rift, and Endgame.

Old biography

During the height of the New Order, Sarne was a young Imperial Survey Corps captain. During a navigation error in the Kathol Sector his ship crashed near the DarkStryder's lair, killing the entire crew except Sarne. He soon found the DarkStryder and struck a deal with the construct: he would trade his hyperdrive technology for the DarkStryder's powerful biotechnology. Sarne was eventually rescued and returned to Imperial Center, where he was assigned to the Blockade Runner Renegade as part of the 15th Deep Core Reserve Fleet.

Sarne returned to the Kathol sector after the Empire's fragmentation, and plotted to take over the galaxy by using the launch gates of the long dead Kathol, the creators of the DarkStryder and the life well. He started his power base on the planet Kal'Shebbol until the New Republic removed his grip on the world. Sarne evaded the Republic forces, escaping through a secret passage to the hangar in his Imperial government complex in the Carrack-class cruiser Ambition and took refuge in the Darkstryder's Fortress.

Sarne later contacted Lancer Brunou about researching the Aaris people's origins. His former ship Renegade was captured by the New Republic and renamed the FarStar, which ironically was tasked with hunting him down. Sarne set up a plethora of death traps and attacks on his former flagship. However his plans for galactic dominance were cut short when the crew of the Farstar defeated the Darkstryder and opened the life well.

Sarne was killed in the explosion of his Imperial shuttle during the Battle of Kathol, shot down by Republic forces while he was trying to escape to the Bastion.

The Raptor, an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer, served under him, as did a special contingent of stormtroopers.
