"I love that world and I love the notion of exploring new people and new places in that universe. But that's sort of all that can be said for now."
―Kevin Feige on his Star Wars film[3]

A stand-alone Star Wars film was being developed by Lucasfilm, with Kathleen Kennedy and Kevin Feige serving as its producers and Michael Waldron as screenwriter. The movie was first confirmed by Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn on September 25, 2019. By 2023, the film had been canceled.

Development

"We're finally into it in earnest. I mean, I'm writing away. It's a lot of fun. I'm enjoying having the freedom on that to do something that's not necessarily a sequel or anything. It maybe has a little bit less of a — it just doesn't have a bunch of TV shows and movies that you're servicing on top of it, the way I did with 'Doctor Strange.' So it's nice. It feels like a different exercise."
―Michael Waldron on writing the film[4]

On September 25, 2019, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige discussed "a foray into the Star Wars universe" with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn in the late summer of that same year. In the same report, Horn confirmed that the news regarding the film was true.[5] Feige commented on the film on November 10, saying "I love that world and I love the notion of exploring new people and new places in that universe."[3] Kennedy later commented during an interview with Los Angeles Times on December 15 that Feige pitched the idea for the film but that it was still in early stages.[6]

Deadline, on January 7, 2021, reported that screenwriter Michael Waldron had been hired to write the screenplay for the film.[7] On June 3, Waldron confirmed the report during an interview with Vanity Fair.[2] Waldron confirmed he was currently writing the script for the film in an interview on May 6, 2022.[8] On May 10, Waldron revealed that the film would be a stand-alone project.[4]

Variety reported that the film had been canceled, saying that Kevin Feige was shifting focus to the future of Marvel Studios on March 7, 2023.[9] At Star Wars Celebration 2023, in an interview with IGN, Kathleen Kennedy denied ever having developed a Star Wars film with Kevin Feige, saying "it's not an abandoned project, it just didn't happen."[10] On May 4, Anthony and Joe Russo claimed that they had early talks to direct Kevin Feige's film.[11] In an interview on November 7, Feige directly confirmed that the film was no longer in development.[12]
