"My dad being an aviator, we had a bunch of flight simulators, [including] TIE Fighter. I'm playing this game for months. And my dad's flying it with me. And I'm like, 'Man, this game is just so cool.' And he's like, 'Well, you know, this game comes from a series of movies.' And I was like, 'You're kidding me.' That is where I watched Star Wars for the first time and realized the full scope of what it meant to world build because I'd been playing this pseudo-16-bit game."
―J.D. Dillard, regarding the film's inspiration[2]

A Star Wars film was in development at Lucasfilm with filmmakers J.D. Dillard and Matt Owens attached as writers. The project was first reported on by The Hollywood Reporter on February 21, 2020. At that time in development, it was unsure if the film would be a theatrical release or if it would be released on the streaming service Disney+. Furthermore, it was unclear if Dillard would also direct the project.[1]

On November 8, 2022, TheWrap published an interview in which Dillard confirmed that the project was no longer in development, saying that it was "unfortunately no longer a thing." The project's cancellation "was not for lack of trying" on Dillard's part. Dillard also revealed that the project would have been influenced by[2] the 1994 video game[3] Star Wars: TIE Fighter, which was Dillard's first introduction to Star Wars as a child.[2]
