A winged creature with reptavian characteristics had a long neck, horned head, red wings and a long tail.[2]
In 4 ABY[3] two of these creatures were kept in a cave adiacent to the main pit that contained Jabba's rancor, below Jabba's Palace on Tatooine.[2]
Behind the scenes
The rancor model fighting a dragon
An image often mistaken to be the rancor from Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi battling a krayt dragon was in reality, a joke from the crew of ILM. They placed a model of one of the dragons from the film Dragonslayer in the arms of the rancor model and took a photo. The photo was included in the book Star Wars: Chronicles.[4]
Creatures based on this dragon were included in Richard Chasemore's artwork of Jabba's Palace for Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy and Star Wars: Complete Locations,[2][5] based on what Chasemore called a "cut scene."[6]

Notes and references
- ↑ Star Wars: Head-to-Head Tag Teams indicates that Jabba's rancor was 5 meters tall. As the winged creature is shown in Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy to have a similar heigth, it presumably is around 5 meters tall.
