The captain of a light freighter was a male individual who served the Rebel Alliance's military branch during the Galactic Civil War. In 3 ABY, he repaired his freighter while stationed in Echo Base on the planet Hoth. He met First Sergeant Hazram Namir following the latter's punishment for brawling with a fellow rebel. While residing in the hangar where the freighter was parked, the captain learned about Namir's punishment, and the two began sharing their views on the rebels and the war after the captain finished repairing the ship.

Conversing while seated on the ship's boarding ramp, the captain believed that the war against the Empire could be won by the rebels after the Battle of Yavin, while Namir stated that the war going on perpetually was beneficial to him. Before the two went their separate ways, the captain stated that the rebels deserved a better fate if Namir was truly fighting for their cause.

The freighter captain was stationed in Echo Base in 3 ABY.

As a member of a crew, the captain served in the Alliance Military during the Galactic Civil War between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire, and possessed a light freighter.[1] In 3 ABY,[2] the captain and his ship were stationed in the Rebel Alliance's Echo Base on the planet Hoth. While repairing his light freighter, he encountered First Sergeant Hazram Namir of the 61st Mobile Infantry in the hangar. Noticing the sergeant's broken nose, he asked what had happened to Namir, who had been punished for getting into a fight with Kryndal, a soldier from the Alliance's special forces, and was given the task of carrying shipping crates to the base's interior as a result. After Namir remarked that the special forces "took the Rebellion seriously," the captain smiled and resumed repairs to his freighter.[1]

Later on, the captain met Namir again, who was hauling parts to the freighter. When Namir delivered the parts to him, the captain questioned about the fight with Kryndal. As the repairs went on, Namir asked the captain about his crew, to which he replied that they were away performing other tasks. After finishing the repairs, the captain sat down on the freighter's boarding ramp and began drinking a bottle of Corellian whiskey, with Namir joining him. While the two drank the whiskey, the captain told a story of how his ship had taken damage, while Namir explained the full reason for why he had been punished. Hearing the sergeant's story, the captain stated that the rebels should not be told they were destined to fail, as he believed that he would outlive his purpose if the rebels were to grow stronger.[1]

Chatting with a fellow soldier

"If it's a job, then it doesn't matter, and neither do they. You do what's right for you, you tell them what they want to hear, and you move on when the job's done. Otherwise—Otherwise, if it's more than a job, they deserve better. If you can't get behind what they believe in, maybe it's time to walk away."

As the two conversed, Namir stated that the captain would have also wanted to start a brawl with the rebels. The captain explained that he never started a fight he had no chance of winning, and asked how Namir began service with the Rebel Alliance. He also explained that the Alliance's victory at the Battle of Yavin, which ended in the destruction of the Death Star superweapon, led him to believe that the war against the Empire could be won. The captain also asked Namir how long they could tolerate the rebels after the war's end before they would start showing resentment towards them.[1]

After Namir revealed that the idea of a perpetual war with the Empire "felt right," the captain asked if that thought bothered him, to which Namir replied that he was here to protect the rebels no matter what they believed in. The captain then explained that the rebels deserved better if Namir was indeed fighting for the Alliance and not for a job, before he boarded his ship. Namir took the captain's words to heart while exiting the hangar, believing that the soldiers of the 61st deserved better.[1]

Personality and traits

"You remember when that battle station blew up?"
"Before my time, but I heard about it."
"After that—I didn't notice at first, but for a while it felt like we could really end this war. You looked at those kids who shot down death…it didn't make any sense if you thought about it, but it felt like we were going somewhere."

The captain was a male individual who had light-colored skin and brown hair. When meeting Namir for the first time, the captain eyed him with a look that the sergeant considered unhappy. Upon their second meeting, the captain began casually questioning Namir about his punishment while repairing the freighter. During their conversation, the captain uttered several profanities while explaining how his ship had received damage. He also stated that his service to the Rebel Alliance was similar in nature to a mercenary. When Namir told the captain that he would've also wanted to fight the rebels at the base, the captain replied he avoided confrontations he felt he had no could not win. He also remarked that Namir could've won the fight with Kryndal if he tried harder.[1]

When Namir asked the captain if ongoing wars created were beneficial to them, the captain rebuked that he was not so selfish. He shared his belief that the Rebel Alliance was eventually going to win the war, opposing Namir's point of view of a never-ending conflict that gave him satisfaction. Before boarding his ship and parting ways with the sergeant, the captain stated that Namir should walk away from the war if he could not understand why the rebels were fighting, and that the sergeant should focus on himself if he was only fighting for the Rebel Alliance as a hired soldier.[1]

Skills and abilities

"You can't just tell these people they're doomed. They ever wise up, I'm out of a job."
"You a mercenary?"
"Something like that."

The captain was able to repair his light freighter with the parts Namir provided without any assistance from the sergeant. He also believed that his skills would become meaningless to the Rebel Alliance if the rebels grew in strength.[1]

Equipment

The captain was in possession of a light freighter, conducting repairs for it during his time at Echo Base using the supplies Namir carried to the hangar. He also owned a bottle of Corellian whiskey, which he and Namir drank during their conversation.[1]

Behind the scenes

The freighter captain appeared in the 2015 novel Battlefront: Twilight Company, written by Alexander Freed.[1] The character had many similarities to the smuggler Han Solo, such as possessing a light freighter, and having light skin and brown hair. This led to speculation that the two characters were the same individual. When questioned about whether or not this was Solo, Freed stated that it was his intention have the smuggler in the novel, but added that others were free to interpret the freighter captain differently.[3]
