A finned, hundreds-of-meters–long creature lived in the ocean of the aquatic moon of Delriss in the Expansion Region. A powerful predator with several spikes on its head, at some point by the time of the Galactic Civil War it attacked an undersea sanctuary of the Jedi Order, severely damaging the facility. Later, during that conflict, the predator sensed the arrival of a group of off-world Force-sensitives aboard the sanctuary and again attacked it, ultimately sending the facility sinking to the bottom of the ocean and chasing the group's starship out of the water.
Biology and appearance
A non-sentient creature was a massive aquatic predator. It had an elongated, multi-finned body that was hundreds of meters in length and was covered in armor-like scales thick enough to withstand damage from blaster weapons—with even lightsabers, although being able to cut through, ultimately only causing insignificant injuries. The creature's snout was long and spike-like, and at least three spikes also protruded from the top side of its head. It had a huge maw that was prominent relative to its head and was filled with oversized teeth. Grim-looking eyes that glowed yellow were set in the creature's head. The predator was powerful enough to leap out of water in pursuit of its prey, and its bite force allowed it to inflict damage on starships.[1]
History
The predator lived on the aquatic moon of Delriss, a natural satellite with a surface-spanning ocean that circled the Expansion Region planet Delriss. At some point by the time of the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Rebel Alliance, the creature attacked a sanctuary of the Jedi Order that had been anchored to an undersea ridge more than a kilometer below the surface. It severely damaged the facility—which measured more than fifty meters across—creating large rents in the durasteel hull and leaving it standing at an angle of approximately twenty degrees.[1]
The predator attacked an underwater Jedi sanctuary on the aquatic moon of Delriss.
During the Galactic Civil War, two decades after the Jedi sanctuary was abandoned, a group of Force-sensitive off-worlders visited the facility in order to obtain the coordinates of the planet Moraband. While the group was approaching the sanctuary, one of its members used their xenology knowledge to recognize the damage done to the facility as potentially having been caused by the claws or teeth of a large creature. While the off-worlders subsequently explored the abandoned sanctuary, the predator detected their presence and, viewing them as fresh prey, approached the facility. The group occasionally glimpsed movement outside its viewports as well as shadows cast by a large creature passing overhead—both of which were caused by the predator.[1]
The creature eventually attacked the facility and attempted to tear through its hull and reach its prey. The attack did further damage to the support struts anchoring the sanctuary to the undersea ridge, first flipping it on its side and ultimately detaching it completely and causing it to sink to the depths of the ocean. After the Force-sensitives fled the facility aboard their starship, the predator pursued them out of the water, leaping into the air and attempting to catch the vessel with its jaws. The group, however, ultimately managed to escape.[1]
Behind the scenes
The aquatic predator is featured in Chronicles of the Gatekeeper.
The creature appeared in Chronicles of the Gatekeeper, a 2015 adventure published by Fantasy Flight Games for use with the Star Wars: Force and Destiny roleplaying game system.[1] Prior to the adventure's publication on November 5,[2] the creature was depicted in an article previewing the product that was published on April 10 of the same year on Fantasy Flight Games' official website.[3]
In Chronicles of the Gatekeeper, it is suggested that gamemaster players use the encounter with the aquatic predator in order to add tension to the player characters' exploration of the underwater Jedi sanctuary or if the gamemaster does not wish for the player characters to obtain the facility's Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptor at that time. The supplement also suggests running the encounter more narratively rather than in a more standard time-structured way, and that the effectiveness of any weapons, including vehicle-mounted ones, used by the player characters against the creature, be decreased. The section of Chronicles of the Gatekeeper where the characters explore the Jedi sanctuary suggests that they either use more specialized diving equipment to reach it or simply make do with their starship, with this article assuming the latter scenario since the adventure explores the predator's actions in more detail in that case.[1]
