- "We've picked up something."
- ―The communications officer
A being of a reddish-purple species with black eyes worked as a communications operator for the Rebel Alliance at an base in an asteroid field.[1] At some point between 0 BBY and 1 ABY,[2][3] the communications operator picked up a signal from a starship while working at the base, and informed General[1] Ristt,[4] Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and their droids R2-D2 and C-3PO of their detection. Skywalker quickly identified the ship as the Millennium Falcon, before the communications officer then explained that the Falcon was coming out of Lightspeed and could not make contact with the ship. In an attempt to make contact with the Millennium Falcon, General Ristt ordered the operator to move to a lower communications channel, which the operator promptly did, allowing the operator to display a live recording from inside the Cockpit of the Millennium Falcon on the viewscreen they were using.[1]
The operator then attempted to hail the Millennium Falcon, but received no response from the oncoming ship. As the operator failed to make contact, the rebels stood behind them quickly identified and located Chewbacca and Han Solo in the cockpit of the Falcon via the viewscreen. The communications operator then announced their failure to make contact, to the rebels standing behind, before once again attempting to make contact with the freighter. As they did so, Ristt realized the Falcon was on a collision course with the rebel base, causing the rebels stood behind the communications operator to briefly discuss Chewbacca's reasoning before Leia then ordered the operator to hold their fire. However, the communications operator then lost all contact with the freighter as it neared the rebel base. In the end however, the Falcon narrowly dodged the rebel base, leaving the it unharmed.[1]
A cartoon was later produced by the Rebel Alliance that depicted the events at the Rebel Base involving the communications operator and the subsequent Mission to Panna Prime, which was watched by Chewbacca's son Lumpawarrump[5] in 1 ABY.[6]
Behind the scenes
The communications operator appeared in The Story of the Faithful Wookiee,[1] a cartoon that aired on television as part of the The Star Wars Holiday Special,[5] which aired on November 17, 1978.[7] The cartoon was later included as an Easter egg on the 2011 Blu-ray release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga.[8]
