«I remember one Trial-born who began as you did, but then simply laid more boards across the first horizontal until the stack was above water level. Equally effective, but not nearly as elegant.»
―Thooraki, to Thalias[1]

A Trial-born member of the Chiss Ascendancy's Mitth family completed the Trials to elevate their status in the family during the lifetime of Patriarch Mitth'oor'akiord, core name "Thooraki." During the Trials, the Trial-born crossed a three-meter-wide channel of water by stacking a number of wooden planks until they were above water level.[1]

In 19 BBY,[2] during her Trials, Mitth'ali'astov "Thalias" placed two boards' end together in the middle of the channel, pushed one board to the opposite side and lowered the other, angling two boards up against the channel's side. She laid another board horizontally across them, added two angled boards, and placed a final horizontal across them. Thooraki admitted that the Trial-born's solution was valid but preferred Thalias's more elegant solution.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Trial-born was mentioned in the 2020 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising, the first installment of Timothy Zahn's Star Wars: The Ascendancy Trilogy.[1]
