- "To this day, they've never adequately explained what happened to the first Death Star. Yes, we all know the big story, Luke Skywalker single starfighter blah blah blah, but honestly, does that sound credible to you? The Empire had the greatest engineers in the galaxy and the Death Star was their finest achievement. There's no way it could've been vulnerable to that kind of attack. The Emperor had to have been betrayed by someone on the inside."
- ―Unidentified Centrist senator
In 28 ABY,[2] a Centrist senator attended a minor reception of individuals known to their host, Ransolm Casterfo, for being enthusiastic collectors of items related to the past regime of the Galactic Empire, including the helmet worn by members of the Emperor's Royal Guard that Casterfo had recently acquired. As they entered with their fellow guests into casual conversation discussed over brandy, this senator voiced skepticism in regards to the role that rebel pilot Luke Skywalker had played in the destruction of the First Death Star Mobile Battle Station during the Battle of Yavin. Wondering aloud if their fellows could honestly believe how the Death Star, which they credited to be the work of the finest engineers the Galactic Empire had to offer, could be destroyed in the way that historical accounts remembered it, the Centrist instead speculated that the Death Star could only have been obliterated if the Rebel Alliance had received assistance from someone from within the Imperial's own ranks.[1]
