A truant officer was an officer tasked with ensuring that students remained in school. The planet Kwenn employed at least one truant officer.
History
Evan Piell briefly served as truant officer
In 33 BBY,[1] the Jedi Master Even Piell visited Kwenn as part of a mission by the Jedi Council to aid the planet and shore up trust among the general public in the Jedi. While there, he sought out trouble, hoping to offer his services, and encountered a patrol officer who was simply standing around. He asked the man if this was where they kept the violence, stating that he wanted to see where the trouble was. The guard told him that he was in the right place, as the island they were on, Essafa Key, housed several local schools. Piell asked why this was trouble and he told him that the students weren't in the schools, that they were instead running wild, harassing people and businesses. Piell replied that they should get a truant officer. The officer replied that they had one and that he had just quit, removing a badge from his uniform and affixing it to Piell, indicating that he was the one who had just quit and it was Piell who was now truant officer. He then stated that he was going to try something more relaxing, like hauling explosives. Piell then engaged with the local youth, intending to fulfill both his Jedi mission and the duties of his new position.
Rather later on, after things had stabilized somewhat on the planet, Piell returned to Essafa Key, where school was now in session thanks to the Mercantile Guild providing the proper funding for it. He encountered a Twi'lek student, Hadaro, who had benefited from his actions. The student pointed out that he was late, but Piell pointed out that this was good, as it at least meant he was going to school. The two chatted pleasantly for a bit longer, before Piell told him to get inside the school, before he remembered that he was the truant officer.[2]
