- "Of these individuals we really only know the codenames they went by rather than their real identities. Even these codenames were based around a strange system of numbers and relationships, with Inquisitors answering to titles like 'Ninth Sister' or 'Third Brother.'"
- ―Beaumont Kin, The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire
The Third Brother was a Force-sensitive male individual who at some point left the Jedi Order,[1] an organization of Force-users affiliated with the Galactic Republic.[4] They went on to serve as a member of the Galactic Empire's Inquisitorius—an organization during the Imperial Era composed of former Jedi tasked with killing Jedi survivors of Order 66, finding Force-sensitive children, and dealing with political dissents.[1] As an Inquisitor, they were trained by Darth Vader,[2] the leader of the Inquisitorius.[5] Sometime later, the historian Beaumont Kin learned of the Inquisitor's existence. Kin included the Third Brother as an example of the codenames used by members of the Inquisitorius in[3] his[6] book The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire, which was published[3] in 35 ABY.[7]
Behind the scenes
- "We reveal that they're refer [sic] to each other as Brother and Sister at this point. Which, of course, they're not related, but it's kind of to make them feel more like some kind of strange cult. They're not called Darths cuz they're not Sith."
"Right."
"So they're First Brother, Second Brother, Third Brother." - ―Dave Filoni, speaking with Andi Gutierrez, first mentions the Third Brother
The Third Brother was first mentioned in Rebels Recon.
The Third Brother was first mentioned in the Rebels Recon "Inside 'Always Two There Are,'" a behind-the-scenes featurette that accompanied[8] "Always Two There Are," the fifth episode of the second season of the animated television series Star Wars Rebels.[9] Both the episode and Rebels Recon video aired on October 28, 2015.[10][8] During the Rebels Recon, Dave Filoni, executive Producer for Star Wars Rebels, discussed how the Inquisitorius named their members with Rebels Recon host Andi Gutierrez and cited Third Brother as an example.[8] The capitalization of the Inquisitor was established in "Darth Maul and Other Followers of the Dark Side," a booklet from De Agostini's Star Wars Encyclopedia series, which was originally released on July 13, 2021.[11]

As Star Wars: Timelines dates the end of the war to 5 ABY and the Battle of Exegol to 35 ABY, the in-universe The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire must have been published in 35 ABY.
