"The Long Goodbye"[1] was a song heard in a recording played at a pastries lounge in Canto Bight.[2]

Behind the scenes

Credited simply as "The Long Goodbye" in the credits for Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi. the piece is an excerpt from the musical score of the 1973 film of the same name.[1]

The music was written by John Williams four years before he scored Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, with lyrics by Johnny Mercer (not included in this rendition). According to sound editor Ren Klyce, director Rian Johnson convinced Williams to perform the piece for solo piano as an Easter egg for inclusion in the film.[3]

It can be heard in the final cut of the The Last Jedi at 1:07:42 beginning with a close-up shot of a tea cup. Much of the music is drowned out by the sound effects for the stampede of the fathiers, but several seconds more of the piece can be heard without the sound effects in the "Score-Only" version of the film originally exclusive to the Movies Anywhere streaming service and eventually included in the extras for the film on Disney+.[4]
