1980 Topps Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Series 1 was a trading card set released by Topps in 1980.[1]
The set was based on Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, and featured stills from the film and promotional photos, all within a red and silver border. The first 10 cards were "Star File" character profile cards. The "Story Digest" themed cards told the story of the movie on the back, and "Space Paintings" cards featured Ralph McQuarrie concept art on the front and "Movie Facts" on the back.[1]
A sub-set of sticker cards were included, the backs of which included a portion of a larger image that could be pieced together with other cards like a puzzle.[1]
Two more series of the set would follow.
Continuity
Most of the profile cards gave characters ages at the time of The Empire Strikes Back that conflicted with later sources. Here, Han Solo was 34 years old, Lando Calrissian 36, Yoda 973, Darth Vader 50, Boba Fett 43, and Princess Leia 20 (two years younger than her later-revealed twin brother, Luke Skywalker). Chewbacca's home planet of Kashyyyk used the alternate spelling seen in early sources, "Kazhyyyk." Solo's planet of birth was listed as "Unknown."
Card 21 featured an image of 2-1B examining a dead tauntaun, as shown briefly in the movie. The card text suggests the tauntaun is the one Skywalker had been riding in previous scenes.
