"Taster's Choice: The Tale of Jabba's Chef" is a short story by Barbara Hambly that tells the story of Jabba the Hutt's chef, Porcellus which was published in Tales from Jabba's Palace December 1995 by Bantam Spectra.
Plot summary
The ever-fretful Porcellus is the head chef in Jabba's Palace. He avoids displeasing the Hutt with food and attempts to maintain a low profile and humble kitchen. Until he hears that Jabba suspects him of putting fierfek in his food – a Huttese term that Porcellus takes to mean "poison". He knows that one bad meal would be a death sentence. When the dead body of Weequay sail barge captain, Ak-Buz, turns up near the kitchen, a terrified Porcellus hides the corpse lest he be a suspect. In the midst of Luke Skywalker's rescue of his friends from Jabba's clutches, Porcellus learns the true definition of fierfek from Skywalker's droid. It translates not to "poison" but to "hex," and sure enough misfortune has followed many who have tasted Porcellus' wares.
