Metempsychosis?

Why was this article moved from Spirit Transference to Metempsychosis? Is there a canon source that refers to this power as "Metempsychosis"? 141.154.165.253 01:46, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

  • I'd have moved it back, but I couldn't think of a canon source that called it "Spirit tranference" either. —Silly Dan (talk) 02:01, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
  • Is there any canon name for this? -- SFH 02:41, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
    • I'm sure one of the sources has a name for it (though, I don't have any of those sources, so I can't say). But I think this should be moved back to Spirit Transference, and maybe tag it with a Conjecture tag until someone can confirm its canon name. Spirit transference is a better name for it becuase it is a much more recognizable and easy to understand title. Most people probably wouldn't know what "Metempsychosis" is (I didn't even know until I did a google search), so I think it would be best to move the article back to its original "Spirit tramsference" title until someone can find out what this powers canon name is. 70.17.154.33 22:00, 15 November 2007 (UTC)
  • I was the one who moved the page to "metempsychosis". It's a more appropriate term that means the same thing, and it's much less bulky and more professional to say. No canon source that I have encountered names it, and so for sake of enriching everyone's vocabulary as well as putting a more suave title on it, I suggest we return it to "metempsychosis". Obviously, its description is a "spirit transference", but that doesn't mean that's its proper name, and the definition of metempsychosis is just that. We could put a note under the title that defines the word if that's a problem. --Jhbartlett 14:32, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
    • Metempsychosis doesn't mean the same thing as spirit transference. According to my research, metempsychosis means the same as reincarnation, and is the idea that the soul will be reborn in a new body, maybe even reborn as an animal or plant. That's not the same as the power the article describes. This force power allows the user to consciously ransfer his consciousness into a body of his choice, while retaining his memory and consciousness. "metempsychosis", on the other hand, is simply reincarnation, where a person is randomly reborn as a new person, or as a plant or animal. So the spirit transference power described in this article is not the same as "metempsychosis".
    • Also, The BtS section of this article says that the Star Wars Roleplaying Game calls this power "Transfer Essence", and a quick google search confirms this. As I understand it, the RPG is canon, so that means that the canon name for this power is Transfer Essence. So the article should be moved to Transfer essence, as that seems to be the most canon name for it that we have (unless another source has a name for it) 70.17.143.25 20:18, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
  • Well, metempsychosis is often used in the context of death/reincarnation, but if you look at the etymology of the word, in its original Greek it was used to signify any migration of the soul. Additionally, there is no such thing as a spirit transference among the living in the world as we know it, so obviously it would only have the connotation of death in its definition. However, since you found a canon source, I suggest you move it to there. Unsigned comment by Jhbartlett (talk • contribs)

Connection? Is there a connection between the Transfer essence and a Horcrux in Harry Potter? When was the transfer essence mentioned? (aka published) when was the horcrux idea established in HP?

  • Very doubtful. Dark Empire was published back in 1992, Horcruxes didn't get referenced until Order of the Phoenix in 2003 or 2004. Either way, the concept of evil wizards shifting their souls is an ancient mythic trope that predates both works. DD97Which bear is best? 03:40, December 2, 2011 (UTC)

Missing info

Apart from the link in the infobox, the text of the article doesn't seem to discuss Darth Zash who, in SWTOR, successfully transfers her essence to the Inquisitor's companion, Khem Val. 195.171.184.58 14:43, December 24, 2013 (UTC)
