Merge discussion
I see somebody added a tag suggesting this article be merged with List of references to Star Wars in television. I'm not sure if a merge discussion is supposed to take place here, or elsewhere, but in any event I'll start it here. Since I stated the page, I obviously don't think it should be merged. This is more than a simple passing reference to Star Wars in a television series. The popularity and amount of news coverage that has resulted from this commercial, I believe, shows it warrants it's own page. (Plus, I am still in the process of working on the page, and I think a bit more time should be allowed to let me finish so we can evaluate the finished product before merging.) And, finally there is precedent for individual articles about particularly popular Star Wars commercials. — Hunter Kahn 16:41, February 7, 2011 (UTC)
- I added it because it doesn't have any significance to canon in any way, shape or form. It's just a cutesy reference to Star Wars. I think all the other articles on Star Wars themed commercials are useless as well, but I suppose that's just my opinion. Darth Adonis 16:46, February 7, 2011 (UTC)
- You're right, it's not canon-related, but it's a valid OOU article. Even if you personally disagree with the commercials having articles, there are plenty of non-canon OOU articles for topics ranging from toy lines, notable fans, real world events, pod casts, etc. etc. — Hunter Kahn 17:06, February 7, 2011 (UTC)
- I'm in support of keeping this article. I believe that the topic has enough notability and there is sufficient information presented (that has been put together quite nicely) to warrant a separate article. The argument of the topic's influence on canon is irrelevant since this is an OOU article per Hunter Kahn. There seems to be no valid reason for merging. Coruscantfan 20:56, February 7, 2011 (UTC)
- I don't really care. We don't have an article on the Star Wars Kid anymore. If we do end up merging it, transpose this article over to the fan projects wiki. NaruHina Talk

- I think the article should be kept, given the precedent of other articles about commercials. If this is merged, then the other articles about commercials should be merged as well. Darth Nordeck 02:45, February 8, 2011 (UTC)
- Which other commercials? Ones like Hope are official. NaruHina Talk

- I'm not talking about the ones used to promote the release of a new canon item (like the one for Vector Prime, or the Tone poems. Definitely not the official stuff. I'm referring to the kinds of things mentioned several posts above, or just those that are not considered "official". Darth Nordeck 03:14, February 8, 2011 (UTC)
- Hmm, let me retract that. The categories mentioned above look like pretty official stuff to me. I guess the question is whether this particular commercial should be considered "official" or not. Darth Nordeck 03:18, February 8, 2011 (UTC)
- It is not. It's a Volkswagon commercial. The only exception I know of where a commercial such as this got an article is Energizer Bunny, which was actually liscenced by LucasFilm and was referenced by another official (non canon) source, the Star Tours ride. NaruHina Talk

- Defeat the Dark Side is another example. Regardless, the point is that this Star Wars related, even if it's not canon-related. If everything on this encyclopedia had to be canon-related, there wouldn't be any OOU articles. (Plus, it looks like Lucasfilm was involved in this commerical: [1] [2].) — Hunter Kahn 04:20, February 8, 2011 (UTC)
- I'm frankly not sure myself that this is deserving of an article. But it has received recognition on the official Star Wars site archives twice, both on the Official Star Wars Blog for the ad itself, as well as a link to the Today Show interview with the kid who was in the Vader costume. Sure seems as though the ad has been "officially recognized." - JMAS

- I agree fully with Hunter Kahn. Daigear 23:19, February 9, 2011 (UTC)
- If it was liscenced by LucasFilm as Star Wars material then it should get an article. "We've partnered with Lucasfilm for the all-new Passat ad, leveraging the emotional heritage of both "Star Wars" and Volkswagen to create a memorable moment." -- Tim Ellis. I'm making this the head quote. It was an official partnership so it should stay. NaruHina Talk

- If this advert gets an article, would that mean the recent Currys advert shown in the United Kingdom is also deserving of an article, despite the fact that it hasn't been so widely shown? Unlike this Volkswagen ad, it actually features two characters from Star Wars voiced and portrayed by their real actors. If you haven't seen the one I'm refuring to, see it here. - Personally, I don't see why not, if you have sources that you can cite for it like in this case. Although I would think the Volkswagen one is more article-worthy since it was a Super Bowl commercial and was so well received. In the meantime, it seems to me there is no consensus for a merge at this time, and arguably even a consensus leaning toward keep, so unless anyone objects in the next day or so I'm going to remove the tag. Sounds good? — Hunter Kahn 00:45, February 10, 2011 (UTC)
- I agree with this and making an article on the other commercial, if it can be sourced properly. Darth Nordeck 01:46, February 10, 2011 (UTC)
