Can we please do something on a little problem?

  • I think we should make 'R2' redirect to 'R2-D2', will someone please do that?
  • I think it's ok like it is, because R2 alone has more to do with the R2-serie that with R2-D2 Lytcha Lauma 1:15, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Uniqueness

I'm wonder about how unique "R2-D2" is. This also goes for C-3PO. The articles focus on the R2-D2 and C-3PO units that accompanied the heroes in the films, but...

What about the other ones? Is it possible that the lovable little droid is actually one of billions upon billions of identical astro droids and the only thing that makes it a "character" is the fact that the same one is in every movie? 75.41.32.173 05:05, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Painfully unfunny vandilism?

Those features happened to be used in the Droids cartoon. Is that show not canon or something? --24.247.124.158

    • Actually, I think Droids is canon, as Admiral Screed is used on the Holonet News website. And Hosk Station was also present, until it was destroyed by the Yuuzhan Vong. Though I'm personally supportive of it being non-canon. The New Jedi Order, not the Droids cartoon. User:SFH

Appearances

OK, who is it that keeps coming along and reordering the appearances on articles so that the films come first?!? Someone needs to correct this. Adamwankenobi 11:33, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

  • What about EU appearances? In the Marvel Comics series R2's been disassembled (SW 67), blasted and almost scrapped for parts (SW 26), and single-handedly saved the entire Rebel Fleet from melting in the Arbran sun (SW 58), among significant examples. Should mention be made of these events in his History?Tocneppil 01:23, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Delving into R2's Memory Banks

It would be interesting to add a section exploring the fact that R2's memory of the events of the prequels was never wiped. I believe a recent novel dealt with R2 revealing some of his knowledge about this time to Luke and Leia. (I'm making this note as a reminder to myself as much as a suggestion to others.) --Briareos 20:49, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Holonet

Can anyone point me to the HoloNet article that explains why R2 couldn't use his rockets in the OT? It needs to be listed in the sources. Adamwankenobi 04:10, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

He never needed or had the time to use the rocket boosters. Why would he use them in tatooine, inside of the falcon, death star, lukes x-wing, Hoth, Dabobah(well they could be handy at the lake), Bespin, Endor.

      • That section needs to be reworded, as it is obviously confusing (and not very encyclopedic, since it ends with an ellipses). Of course the cartoon is canon. It is just that the movement is very exaggerated. Of course Artoo can't stretch or bend, but there is no reason he can't breakdance. -- Ozzel 05:27, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

How old is R2?

I've noticed that R2 has been around since 32 BBY. If he's not destroyed by today, about 41 ABY, that means he's over 73 years old. Will r2 ever reach his centennial year? 75.46.26.64 23:22, 24 September 2006 (UTC), an anony.

  • Where did he come from? Was he built on naboo?
    • I don't know if he ever put it into official canon status, but I remember George saying something about the droids being hundreds of years old. There's also something about how the "Long ago . . ." in the opening crawl of the films was tied into those events being told from the perspective of one of the droids. Its either a throw-away line Lucas used in an interview, or from the Skywalking biography, I think.Tocneppil 22:37, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
      • The Journal of the Whills ties into this. As for his age, if he was still around in 140 ABY, and we took his age at the time period of the Legacy comics, and assumed he was recently built in 32 BBY, then he would be around 170 years old, but that's only if he survived that long.   • The article now contains a statement about being built in 33 BBY, but seeing how 62 BBY saw the first R3s, and R2 would, presumably based on his number, be one of the earliest, I expect the droid to be older than this. Also, artoo was not built on Naboo. All R-series astomech droids are products of Industrial Automaton and therefore originate from the Nubus system, specificly the plannet of Nubia. Abilities controversy section

I don't know that there's actually a need to mention Artoo "lifting himself" into Luke's X-wing in ESB. How do we know that Luke didn't do the lifting? That kind of thing isn't exactly difficult for a Jedi. Red XIV 08:18, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

  • actually, in Star wars: the Complete visual Dictionary, in 'R2-D2 expanded', it says that the company that made his rocket boosters was shut down after the founding of the Empire. And later, Artoo's boosters were damaged, and the replacement parts weren't availible. Alpha X 01:22, 9 May 2007 (UTC)
  • i can find no source for this either, though it should be noted that in ep.3 R2 does lift himself out of starfighters, for exapmle, Anikin Skywalker's right at the start.

Flaw in owners

In Star Wars IV, C-3PO says that captian Antilles is the last owner before Luke skywalker.

Obi's amnesia

How come Obi-Wan don't remember R2-D2 in ep 4 and neither does Yoda in ep 5? Gustafar 17:43, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Yoda would have no reason to remember Artoo. And if you remember, Obi-Wan didn't hold a very high opinion of droids. And one R2 unit looks pretty much like the next, with maybe a different color scheme. There really is no reason to assume he would remember, especially since nobody refers to him as R2-D2 or even Artoo. - JMAS 18:06, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

  • I think at the beginning of Episode III they call him Artoo. And Ben also calls R4... R4. So he remembers them. And where is it stated that he didn't hold a very high opinion of droids?... Klow 18:48, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
    • That still doesn't cut it, I'm afraid. How many millions of R2 droids were there? Presumably all called "Artoo" at some point. The same goes for R4. — beeurd talk 00:45, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
    • Klow, it isn't exactly mentioned that he thinks lowly of droids, but in the Novelization of Revenge of the Sith by Matthew Stover, it says somewhere that Obi-Wan sees droids as tools, comparable to the blender in your kitchen, differing from Anakin, who has attatchements to Artoo. Obi-Wan even corrects Anakin's pronoun usage of "he" to "it". An irrelevant point of interest would be that Obi-Wan prefers live mounts to mechanical mounts, (like swoop bikes), while Anakin prefers the opposite.--Jero 10:06, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
      • Obi Wan only ever says that he doesn't ever remember owning a droid. Apparently the droids he is with in Episode II and III were owned by the Jedi Order or the Republic and he was just using them. Hibby
      • Here’s another thing to think about, maybe Obi-Wan pretends not to recognize him because he wants to protect Luke, if he "remembers him" he would have to explain that the droid once belonged to Luke's father and if Luke knew R2 knew his father... then he might have asked R2 about his father, or maybe he would have searched R2's memory for information about his father. R2 is one of my favorite characters. Does anyone not like him?

I agree. He is my favorite droid, which automaticly makes him #1 on my top ten favorite characters list.

R2 not so trusting?

How come Artoo seem's so mistrusting of Yoda in Ep 5? I know he probably didn't know him that well but still he should have at least realised that he's not a bandit or something.203.53.167.180 10:50, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

When I made a minor spelling correction, I found out that the size of this article is 56 kb (when it should be ≤ 32 kb). Hope someone finds the goodwill and experience (I'm a new user here, so I have no experience) to help out!

Who is Tyne and The Idd Family?

Under R2-D2'S list of owners it says that at one time he was owned by The Idd Family and at an unknown date by someone called Tyne. I have a felling that there from the old droids comics but I have not read any of those so I would be glad if someone could make article's on them.Bao-Dur's clone 17:01, 2 July 2008 (UTC)
