"For over a thousand generations"

I think it should be noted that the Jedi were around for at least 20,000 before the Battle of Yavin, due to Obi Wan's quotation "For over a thousand generations, the Jedi were guardians of the Old Republic". A generation is commonly accepted to be twenty years. This quote also implies that the Old Republic was founded over 20,000 years before the rise of the Empire. This REALLY needs to be taken into account. Darth Ravigious (talk) 03:18, April 6, 2016 (UTC)

  • Well, let me play devil's advocate here. Considering that Legends isn't a factor, do we really know that the Jedi Order was around for a thousand generations? The Jedi as a philosophy, way of life, skill set, etc may have been around for a thousand generations, but maybe the Jedi Order itself is only a few thousand years old? Maybe it took a long time for any sort of formalized Order to spring up. Remember, Obi-Wan never said anything about the Jedi Order, just the Jedi. It wasn't until Episode I that we saw a canonical introduction to a formalized Jedi Order. So there are different directions that the official canon story could take. Given that, we shouldn't say that the Jedi Order was around for at least 20,000 years. That may not be true. We also shouldn't make any judgements about how long the Old Republic has been around. Canon has already shown us that there's the Old Republic and the Galactic Republic. So we shouldn't read much into Obi-Wan's line. The Star Wars story has evolved since Episode IV, and our assumptions could be incorrect. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 03:52, April 6, 2016 (UTC)
    • Ah. Alright. Just bringing it up. It was just one of those things that popped into my head all of a sudden and made me wonder. Hmm, that being the case, what of the Jedi article, seeing as the concept of "Jedi" is more along the idea of ideals as opposed to the concept of establishment (seeing as the comparison you implied is more akin to the difference between a man of chivalry and the member of an order of knights with a chivalric code, which I agree with)? Darth Ravigious (talk) 04:28, April 6, 2016 (UTC)
      • I would use the exact wording Obi-Wan does: "for over a thousand generations." I wouldn't apply real world numbers to it. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 04:33, April 6, 2016 (UTC)

Jedi vs Jedi Order

Since Jedi Crusader and Ordu Aspectu are affiliated with the Jedi and not the Jedi Order, would we include Jedi in the infobox under the members or sub-unit section as "Jedi" and "Jedi Order" are not the same, rather the Jedi are members of the Jedi Order?--Vitus InfinitusTalk 00:40, February 12, 2018 (UTC)

  • I should've looked better. Jedi Order is a sub-unit of the Jedi, it's all good now.--Vitus InfinitusTalk 00:43, February 12, 2018 (UTC)

members of the order

can we add members section of the jedi order page? (Mrjosh1994 (talk) 21:43, May 6, 2018 (UTC))

Possible Merge between Jedi and Jedi Order

This question was asked months ago on the Jedi article's talk page that no one responded to, but why are there separate articles for "Jedi" and "Jedi Order"? No distinction is made between the "Sith" and "Sith Order." Most of the information in the "Jedi" article can easily be merged into the "Jedi Order" page. I suppose one might argue that there was no "Jedi Order" after Order 66, just a few "Jedi" survivors. However, Luke Skywalker's databank article lists "Jedi Order" among his affiliations, thereby confirming that the Jedi Order never fully died out during the Imperial Era in spite of the Sith's efforts. Without a canon source to confirm that "Jedi" and "Jedi Order" are separate, I believe that the former should be merged into the latter's page. JRT2010 (talk) 05:33, June 11, 2018 (UTC)

  • I'd suggest starting a Senate Hall conversation about this, since there are implications beyond this page. For example, we also have Jedi/Legends and Jedi Order/Legends. In that case I think it definitely makes more sense to have two separate pages since Legends also had the New Jedi Order, but it's worth having a more comprehensive conversation in a centralized place IMO. - Brandon Rhea(talk) 05:37, June 11, 2018 (UTC)

Jedi Order as combatants in the First Order-Resistance war.

Just outta curiosity why is the Jedi Order listed as a Combatant in the First Order-Resistance War and the Battle of Crait pages?--Jkirk8907 (talk) 22:08, July 27, 2019 (UTC)

  • Rey is a member of the Jedi Order --Lewisr (talk) 22:25, July 27, 2019 (UTC)

Religion

In The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker refers to the "Jedi religion." Is that enough for us to add Category:Religious organizations to this page? VergenceScatter (talk) 03:54, June 10, 2020 (UTC)VergenceScatter

  • The first sentence of the intro reads "The Jedi Order was a noble religious order…" so I'm surprised the cat wasn't there already. RattsT (talk) 08:55, June 10, 2020 (UTC)

New Jedi Order

Hello guys. Now, I remember back when The Force Awakens came out, there were separate pages: one for the Jedi Order of pre-purge eras, and another for Luke Skywalker's Jedi. Then they were merged. The thing is Skywalker's academy is a clear counterpart to the Order he established in Legends and there's now even a canonical source - Star Wars Helmet Collection - which dubs it the "New Jedi Order". All three initials capital. Which is, ofcourse, how it was in the old EU. Thoughts? Juraj103 (talk) 13:02, 19 December 2020 (UTC)

  • The Sequel Trilogy and its ancillary material make it quite clear that the Jedi Order of that era is the restored version of the one that fell in the Prequels and was hunted to near extinction by the time of the Original Trilogy. At the moment, I don't think there is enough to justify splitting the pages, even with the name "New Jedi Order" which, to me, merely separates the "Sequel era Jedi" from the "Prequel era Jedi", yet both belong to the same Jedi Order. The Star Wars Book uses the word "Jedi" in the affiliations of characters like Mace Windu, Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker, Ben Solo, and Rey. It does not distinguish Ben or Rey from the Jedi who came before with something like "New Jedi." According to the same book, the status of the Jedi Order is "rebuilding, and by "Jedi Order" it refers to the one (the only one, in canon so far) that has existed from c. 25,000 BBY to around the present when Luke started training Rey. JRT2010 (talk) 13:22, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
    • i think it's worth considering re-splitting the pages. Luke's jedi order feels important enough to have it's own article, a specific reasoning for this is how i've been trying to find members of his order through the category tags, but due to them just being marked as "Jedi order members" it's been nearly impossible to find them. I feel having a specific page for his order is worth putting, especially considering how rey's order is being called the "New Jedi Order", showing that continuations of the Jedi Order can be new things.BearInsanity (talk) 03:46, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
      • It's still technically the same Jedi Order per the Databank, in which Luke Skywalker's page lists "Jedi Order" under Affiliations. The Jedi Order databank page mentions Luke Skywalker's dream of "rebuilding the Jedi Order" (as opposed to starting a new one). Until a canon source specifically identifies a "New Jedi Order" as a separate institution from the Jedi Order, and not just a new generation of Jedi Post-Order 66, I believe we should not split the page for now. JRT2010 (talk) 04:56, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
        • Category-wise, can we at least make a subcategory for members of luke's jedi order, for ease of access? BearInsanity (talk) 16:19, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
          • If its the same Jedi Order per the Databank, isnt really our place to arbitrarily decide to separate things (WP:CANON). That's up to Lucasfilm, so would stay as-is until/if an official source comes out to override the Databank to class them as separate orgs (for both page and categorization).spookywillowwtalk 18:42, 3 February 2025 (UTC)

What is the meaning of "Jedi Religion"

The article states that Luke uses the phrase "Jedi Religion" and has "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary" book as a reference. Does the term Jedi Religion literally mean "religion" or "sect/cult"? There is no sentence in "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary" book that the Jedi Order is literally "religion". SheevPalpatinee (talk) 17:05, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

  • I'd have to check the visual dictionary, but I know for a fact that Luke refers to the Jedi as a religion in TLJ. VergenceScatter (talk) 15:10, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
    • Luke doesn't say on TLJ that the Jedi Order is literally a religion. I reviewed the visual dictionary and there is no such definition. SheevPalpatinee (talk) 15:22, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
      • He does, actually. The order is also called a religion in Episode IV. VergenceScatter (talk) 16:03, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
      • I checked the TROS VD, and while that source doesn't use the specific word "religion" in regards to the Jedi, it does have "Jedi scripture" as the title of a page spread (and uses it throughout that spread) and the "sacred texts." Those words support the term "religion" as it is used elsewhere. Please make sure you sign your comments with ~~~~! Immi Thrax (talk) 16:29, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
        • Yes, it is referred to as the "Jedi scripture". The characterization of Jedi books as "Scripture" does not mean that the Jedi Order is a literally "religion".(e.g. Important books for the Jedi Order.) SheevPalpatinee (talk) 17:09, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
          • That's beside the point, though. The Jedi are referred to as a religion in multiple movies. VergenceScatter (talk) 17:31, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
            • The Jedi Order hasn't been referred as a religion in any of the movies. Those who saw the Jedi Order as religion/sorcerers were the local people. SheevPalpatinee (talk) 17:49, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
              • "You are all that is left of their religion." — Tarkin to Vader, Episode IV. "Just like me, they're the last of the Jedi religion." — Luke Skywalker, Episode VIII. So yes, they were in the movies. CIS roundel Erebus Chronus (talk) 17:52, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
                • The fact that ordinary people call the Jedi order "religion" does not mean that the Jedi order is "religion". It's the same as calling the jedi "sorcerers". I have to reconsider this quote from Luke. If "religion" had said it would remain in my mind and it would be added as a reference. SheevPalpatinee (talk) 19:01, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
                • Could the expression "Jedi religion" be used to mean "Jedi faith"? This is translated as "Jedi faith" in the different languages of the movie.SheevPalpatinee (talk) 19:35, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
                  • What's the difference between a Jedi and a non-Jedi individual saying it's a religion? CIS roundel Erebus Chronus (talk) 19:46, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
                    • Non-Jedi cannot know the Jedi order philosophy and the Force. The Jedi order is not a religion, just as the Jedi are not sorcerers. Non-Jedi often say they are sorcerers for Jedi. This does not make the Jedi "sorcerers". SheevPalpatinee (talk) 20:34, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Public reception

I think a section on the public's reception of the Jedi Order would be vary helpful. Things such as Trace and Rafa Martez, and the Book of Law and Allya and the Nightsisters would be included. AmazinglyCool CIS roundel (talk) 20:45, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

A Subcategory for Canon Luke's Jedi

Currently, it's nearly impossible to search for members of Canon Luke's jedi order on the wiki, as there's no distinction for them in catagories, they're just listed as members of the same jedi order as the pre-purge one, since it's a revival of that order.

So, i propose we add a category like how we have "Post-Ruusan Jedi", but for Luke's revival of the Jedi Order. Something like "Post-Empire Jedi"? or "Jedi of Luke Skywalker's New Generation of Jedi"? (and we could do the same for things like droids and vehicles) So they'd still be listed as part of the same order, they'd just have their own specific category for organization, so it's reasonable to be able to find them on the wiki.
