tech origins

We need to draw to everybody's attention that this is a Star Trek technology, not Star Wars. Although, it is strongly evidenced that they take place in the same world. Fan speculation (such as about relationships between Star Wars and other universes) is not appropriate for Wookieepedia, but if you have documented sources explaining how a particular item of technology originated in another fictional universe, please add it to the page!
