Crynoids, or snow spiders, were arachnids native to the ice planet Neftali. Skilled at climbing and jumping, the tiny, three-centimeter-long species had ten segmented legs and was colored gray and white. Preferring to live among certain mosses found in the planet's caverns near thermal vents, they were known to crawl into an individual's bedroll, and during the reign of the Galactic Empire, a small number were located in Exovar's Emporium.[1]
While the non-sentient crynoids mostly ate the mosses they lived among and were not generally aggressive, they would bite if harassed such that they felt threatened. This bite would inject a potent venom that could kill a humanoid within an hour. Those individuals that were lucky to survive or had a medpac handy would not escape or receive relief from the intense pain the venom would bestow for six hours, for there was no known remedy. The solitary creatures could only be seen in pairs when they had recently mated.[1]
Behind the scenes
Crynoids were created for in Wretched Hives of Scum & Villainy, a 1997 sourcebook for West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game. The book was written by Paul Danner and featured an illustration of the arachnid by Jacen Burrows.[1]
