"A silan? I thought they were just mythical creatures like barracles or glooths."
"They exist..."
Qui-Gon Jinn to Obi-Wan Kenobi[1]

A silan was a monstrous, tentacled creature from Arorua. They resembled a mass of writhing tendrils and multiple toothy maws, quite similar to a sarlacc. The silan lived in a towering earthen structure, with animal skulls strewn about the dank and gloomy vicinity as trophies or offerings from locals.

Silans were primordial creatures immersed in the dark side of the Force. Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi killed one of the creatures in 44 BBY, directed by the Living Force.

After destroying it, Kenobi questioned whether what they did was right, wondering if even a creature like that had a place in the natural order, meaning it should be respected. Jinn expressed that he also found the experience unpleasant but felt directed by the Force to do so. He advised his Padawan that the ways of the Force were mysterious and the path of the Jedi was not an easy one, for they always had to be ready to serve something greater than themselves.
